Marseille and Lens will battle this weekend in one of the biggest games of the Ligue 1 season so far as the home side head into this one off the back of taking a huge hit in their race for the title last time out just as Lens aim to stay third.
This game is fourth playing hosts to third in the division too, and it will be the biggest test of the season for Lens, in particular, as this fixture comes just one week after Marseille fell to a defeat to league leaders PSG. In truth, a title chase from either side was never likely given the power of the champions, but after now falling six points behind so early on, it does look as if things have darkened for Dimitri Payet and co.
On the other hand, they still sit with the second-best defensive record in the league with eight goals let in across 11 games, and with 20 goals scored of their own, there is still plenty to shout about for Marseille. They are also flying high in the Champions League, and they head into this game having defeated Sporting Lisbon 4-1 on home soil and 2-0 over in Portugal. In praising this, however, they did lose to Ajaccio 2-1 in between these impressive results over the Primeira Liga giants.
Lens are in excellent form still, however, as they have beaten Lyon and Montpellier 1-0 this month, losing to only Lille in the past three weeks. It keeps them third in the league with the same number of wins as Marseille, and if they are to consider themselves title challengers, a win here is an absolute must.
