Montpellier and Lille are both coming off the back of different results in midweek, with the 2020/21 champions now sitting ninth in the league after another loss keeps them well off form in the early stages of this new Ligue 1 season.
Times have been very tough for Lille ever since lifting the title two seasons ago. They ended up finishing 10th last campaign, and with a loss to Nice in midweek, the club remain eighth and have barely anything to shout about so far.
Jonathan Bamba scored in the 2-1 loss to Nice, but with a 7-1 mauling at the hands of Paris Saint-Germain still just under two weeks old, the feeling of losing is all too common for Lille fans right now. They did manage to defeat Ajaccio last weekend, as Tusuf Yazici, Bamba and Tiago Djalo all scored a goal each.
As for Montpellier, they are sitting fifth right now in what has been a fantastic season for them. In fact, the only sides that sit above them in the Ligue 1 table are those who remain unbeaten in the league. Montpellier, however, just beat Ajaccio 2-0 with goals from Elye Wahi and Arnaud Nordin, which does come two weeks after their two losses of the season to PSG and Auxerre.
Nevertheless, it was just two weeks ago in which they hammered Brest 7-0 away from home as five different goalscorers got in on the act. Montpellier will use this as great confidence in getting past a Lille side who cannot seem to keep a clean sheet and who remain very inconsistent this season.
