It’s one of the biggest games in Ligue 1 this weekend as two sides meet one another with hopes of getting into Europe for next season as Nice welcome Lens to the Allianz Riviera as French football returns to our TV screens.
Nice are coming into this one off the back of topsy-turvy few games during the World Cup break. The club beat Standard Liege 4-1 in a friendly back at the start of December, before a 3-0 loss to Atalanta. However, they managed to draw 1-1 with Tottenham Hotspur, which is a pretty decent result given the standings of either side in their respective leagues.
On the other hand, Nice are down in ninth and their hopes of getting back into Europe for next season are gradually fading with an eight-point gap on fifth-placed Lorient. Worse yet, they are the lowest-scoring side for those sitting outside of the relegation zone, as Nice have netted only 15 goals from 15 games.
As for Lens, they won all three of their friendlies during the World Cup break, beating Montpellier 2-1, Le Havre 3-0 and then Reims 2-1 as well. At the same time as this excellent run, they sit with 11 wins and just one loss in Ligue 1, while having let in a stunning 10 goals from 15 games.
Sadly for Lens, despite sitting only five points behind Paris Saint-Germain at the top of the table, a league triumph is very unlikely given the form of the league leaders. Nevertheless, they should be credited very highly for their fantastic form this season.
