Match preview

The new era at Paris Saint-Germain begins, but we’ve been here before haven’t we?

Last season, despite regaining the Ligue 1 title, Mauricio Pochettino was sacked and largely ridiculed for his time in Paris.

Since, after an extended managerial search, Christophe Galtier is the new man to occupy the hottest of hot seats.

He won the Ligue 1 title with Lille in 2021 but, of course, it’s not domestic success that’ll be demanded of him at PSG.

PSG lifted eight successive Trophée des Champions title, before this streak was ended last August by a surprise 1-0 defeat to Lille in Tel Aviv.

At the same venue, will Paris Saint-Germain be far too strong this time?

Nantes meanwhile are competing in this competition for the first time since beating Strasbourg 21 years ago.

La Maison Jaune are here as Coupe de France winners; Ludovic Blas’ penalty downing Nice at Stade de France back in May.

This is Nantes’ 16th major honour, but their first since last being Ligue 1 champions in 2001.

Also, as cup winners, they’ve qualified for the Europa League group stages, their first appearance in UEFA competition for over two decades.

So, there’s plenty for Antoine Kombouaré’s team to be excited about, starting with this curtain raiser.

Who will lift the Trophée des Champions at Bloomfield Stadium?

Paris Saint-Germain team news

After a long saga towards the start of the summer, Kylian Mbappé committed his future to Paris Saint-Germain.

He’s already won 12 domestic honours, including this competition twice, and that figure will almost certainly increase this season.

He’s likely to start here, alongside Neymar and Lionel Messi.

New signing Hugo Ekitike, who’s arrived from Stade de Reims, is the back-up striker option.

In goal, Gianluigi Donnarumma could get the nod over Keylor Navas.

New signings Vitinha and Nordi Mukiele, from Porto and RB Leipzig, will be hoping for their debuts.

Sergio Ramos, who’s only played 843 minutes last season, will be hoping for vastly more this time round.
