The Supporters’ Shield is now Philadelphia Union’s to lose and, the way they’re going, lose is not a word currently in their vocabulary.

Last weekend, Jim Curtin’s men were on fire again, this time demolishing Orlando City 5-1 at Subaru Park.

Mikael Uhre, Dániel Gazdag, Alejandro Bedoya and Jack Elliott all on target in another memorable night in Pennsylvania.

This result means Philly are only the second side in MLS history to score 4+ in five successive home games.

Also, the Union have scored 23 times in their last five matches home or away, three more than any other club has managed across a five-game period.

The best goal difference a team has ever ended an MLS season with is +48 and, given Philadelphia are currently on +46, that record is more than attainable.

The Union are top of the overall standings, two clear of LAFC, knowing three more wins and the shield is theres.

Atlanta United meantime have won MLS Cup, doing so back in 2018, something that’s so far proved illusive for their visitors.

These days, the Five Stripes are ninth in the Eastern Conference, but are attempting to make a late surge for the play-offs.

On Wednesday night, Thiago Almada was the only scorer as Gonzalo Pineda’s team beat Orlando City 1-0 in Florida.

This was Atlanta’s first road victory since 3 April and, having also beaten Toronto 4-2 last Saturday, they’ve now won back-to-back MLS games for the first time in 12 months.

Given that they’re still two points below the play-off line, they really need to make this a nine-point-week.

Neverthless, this relentless Philadelphia outfit will be confident of victory at Mercedes-Benz Stadium.
