Match preview

Having now scored their first-ever goal, can Charlotte FC claim their first-ever points or even win?

Last weekend, fans of Queen City made the relatively short 265 mile journey over to Georgia to take on Atlanta United at Mercedes-Benz Stadium.

On the day, it made it 1-1 but, in the 96th minute, Atlanta won it with a deflected shot in the cruelest of fashion.

This means Miguel Ángel Ramírez’s side are still pointless having lost 3-0 to D.C. United and 1-0 to LA Galaxy in week’s one and two.

When the Galaxy visited North Carolina a fortnight ago, 74,479 were in attendance, breaking the MLS single-game attendance record.

About half that number will be in for this one, but will those who are there be rewarded with an historic win?

New England Revolution in contrast are one of the league’s founding clubs, winning five MLS Cups and last year’s Supporters’ Shield to date.

However, Bruce Arena’s side have made a mixed start to the campaign, first drawing 2-2 with Portland Timbers before a narrow 1-0 win over FC Dallas.

Last weekend, the Revs looked set for another victory with Emmanuel Boateng and Jozy Altidore on target against Real Salt Lake.

Despite leading 2-0 with just 12 minutes to go at a snowy Gillette Stadium, RSL scored thrice, the latter snatching victory in the 93rd minute.

In fairness to New England, this collapse came in-between the two legs of their CONCACAF Champions League quarter-final against Pumas U.N.A.M.

First, in Foxborough, Adam Buksa’s brace saw the Revs claim a memorable 3-0 victory over the Liga MX side.

However, on Wednesday night at Estadio Olímpico Universitario, they threw away that advantage, going down 3-0.

So, a penalty shootout followed, in which Tommy McNamara and Sebastian Lletget both missed as New England heartbreakingly crashed out.

With the visitors possibly fatigued and certainly mentally exhausted, will Charlotte cause a bit of an upset at Bank of America Stadium?
