Match preview

New York City FC’s terrible form continues.

On Wednesday night, Thiago Martins scored a comical own goal and was then sent off as the Citizens were held to a 1-1 draw by Cincinnati at Citi Field.

The Brazilian is just the second player in MLS to put through his own net and be dismissed in the same game, after Jon Conway of Toronto in 2010.

This result means NYCFC have taken just five points from their last nine games, losing six of them, their worst form since the very start of their expansion season.

Nick Cushing’s team remain fourth in the Eastern Conference but, if this form continues, they could drop out the play-off places.

Charlotte FC meantime are going to need to produce an astonishing winning streak if they’re to gatecrash the top seven in, what is, their maiden campaign.

Christian Lattanzio’s team have now lost three on the bounce so are now 12th, seven points below the play-off line.

Can Charlotte take advantage of NYCFC’s horrendous form at Banc of America Stadium?
