Charlotte FC become Major League soccer’s 28th current team as they play their first-ever competitive match.
They’ll become North Carolina’s first-ever professional soccer club and are looking to buck the trend when it comes to expansion clubs struggling.
Premier League champions Christian Fuchs, now 35, is a familiar face; he’s spent the last six months with the second-team Charlotte Independence.
Goalkeeper Kristijan Kahlina as well as Jan Sobociński and DP Karol Świderski have come in from Eastern Europe, the latter will be their starting striker.
But, their star man is likely to be midfielder Sergio Ruiz who’s spent the last 18-months on loan at Segunda División club Las Palmas.
That said, it would be fanciful to think Charlotte could push for the play-offs so they’ll just be looking to avoid being the new FC Cincinnati.
Given this, D.C. United will fancy their chances of an opening weekend win.
The Black-and-Red are one of just nine founding member clubs still active, winning all four of their MLS Cups between 1996 and 2004.
However, since beating Real Salt Lake in the 2013 U.S. Open Cup Final, D.C. have not added anymore silverware to their collection.
Last season, they missed out on the play-offs, finishing eighth in the east, so have since changed manager with Hernán Losada now in charge.
Paul Arriola is their notable departure, joining FC Dallas for $2 million of GAM, while Greek international Taxiarchis Fountas in their new DP.
D.C. have only made the play-offs in two of the previous five season but will certainly be aiming for a top seven finish this year.
Will this be a debut match to remember for Charlotte FC?
