New York Red Bulls have already beaten D.C. United twice this season, 3-0 in the U.S. Open Cup and 4-1 in the reverse fixture.

Match preview

After a mixed start to life in the D.C. United hot-seat, will Wayne Rooney’s team claim three points in this Atlantic Cup rivalry match?

Last weekend, in Rooney’s first game in charge, the Black-and-Reds looked set for defeat at home to Orlando City.

That is until Chris Durkin equalised in the first minute of stoppage time, before Taxiarchis Fountas rounded off a well-worked winner with the last kick of the night.

Despite this, D.C. then came crashing right back down to earth again on Wednesday night, easily beaten 3-0 by Charlotte FC at Bank of America Stadium.

This means the capital club have conceded 3+ goals in five of their last eight MLS road matches.

Will that change here?

New York Red Bulls meanwhile are firmly in the conversation for silverware in 2022.

Gerhard Struber’s team have already won seven away games this year, looking to match the club record set in 2000 and 2018 with a victory here.

However, on their own turf on Tuesday night, RBNY were on the wrong-end of a true MLS thriller.

Despite leading 2-0 and then 3-1, the Red Bulls were beaten 5-4 by Colorado Rapids in New Jersey.

Dru Yearwood, Aaron Long, Lewis Morgan and Tom Barlow all scoring in vain.

Despite this, RBNY remain fourth in the east, looking to, at least, stay there, aiming to secure a home first round play-off match-up.

Although, given the Red Bulls’ road form, maybe that isn’t the best idea after-all.

New York have already beaten D.C. twice this season, so are looking to complete the hat-trick at Audi Field.
