The revolution at Toronto FC has begun.
Between 2016 and 2019, TFC were one of the league’s dominant forces, appearing in three of four MLS Cups, lifting the trophy in 2017.
However, last year, the Reds won just six games all season so finished second bottom of the overall standings, above only FC Cincinnati.
Now though, Bob Bradley is in charge having previously won MLS Cup with Chicago and the Supporters’ Shield in charge of LAFC in 2019.
This has resulted in high player turnover with Omar Gonzalez, Richie Laryea, Tsubasa Endōh, Marky Delgado, Dom Dwyer, Jozy Altidore and others all departing.
Carlos Salcedo has arrived as a DP while Lorenzo Insigne will be available from 1 July when his Napoli contract expires.
The latter is an absolute game changer as Insigne could be the best player in MLS but, with half a season to play before he comes in, TFC need to stay in the play-off picture.
As for FC Dallas, they too are aiming for better after an equally underwhelming season.
In 2021, they finished way down in 23rd in the overall standings, thereby missing the play-offs for only the second time in eight seasons.
Nico Estévez has taken over as Head Coach, is first role in the top job, but takes over a squad that’s been weakened over the winter.
Ricardo Pepi has been sold to Augsburg for a record-breaking $20 million while Bryan Acosta, Ryan Hollingshead and Phelipe Megiolaro have also departed.
Maarten Paes, Alan Velasco, Nanu and Marco Farfan have touched-down in Texas but at least a couple of those are unknowns.
All of this makes for an unpredictable season opener at Toyota Stadium.
