The challengers take on the champions in a mid-week Western Conference clash not to be missed.

Los Angeles FC won the MLS Cup-Supporters’ Shield double just last season, but face a real fight to retain either trophy.

Last mid-week, Steve Cherundolo’s side suffered a third consecutive MLS defeat, beaten 2-1 in el Tráfico by LA Galaxy, in front of a record-breaking crowd of 82,110 at the Rose Bowl.

On Saturday, the Black and Gold did at least stop the rot, holding San Jose Quakes to a 1-1 draw at home, with Dénis Bouanga equalising from the penalty spot.

However, having failed to win four on the spin, LAFC have slipped down to third, now five points below the west’s current leaders.

To the surprise of many, possibly even themselves, the team who remain at the best in the west are St. Louis City SC, a remarkable feat given that this is their expansion season.

As a result, St. Louis could not be coming into this huge, almost, top-of-the-table clash with any more confidence.
