These two were the biggest surprises in the Western Conference last season but for completely contrasting reasons.
Colorado Rapids, against all expectations, topped the west last season, despite only making the play-offs in two of the seven previous campaigns.
So the Rapids, who’s sole piece of silverware is MLS Cup from 12 years ago, will be hoping to add to that in 2022.
In the off-season, they’ve lost key midfielder Kellyn Acosta, more on him in a minute, and highly-rated Cole Bassett who’s moved to Feyenoord.
Aboubacar Keita and Bryan Acosta have both joined from within MLS, while 20 year old Max Alves is their star signing from Flamengo.
Unlike almost all other MLS clubs, the Rapids have already been in action this year kicking off in the CONCACAF Champions League.
They’ve taken on Guatemalan side Comunicaciones, losing the first leg 1-0 away before Wednesday night’s win by the same scoreline at home.
This took it to a penalty shootout but Jack Price, Jonathan Lewis, Keegan Rosenberry and Andre Shinyashiki all missed from 12 yards as they crashed out.
Will they now start the MLS season with a win?
LAFC, in stark contrast to their opponents, finished ninth in the west last year, thereby missing the play-offs for the first time in their history.
In just their second-ever season, 2019, LAFC lifted the Supporters’ Shield before reached the CONCACAF Champions League Final a year later.
But, last time round, the Black and Gold won just 12 of 34 regular season fixtures, ending up 19th in the overall standings.
Since then, Bob Bradley has gone with highly-rated coach Steve Cherundolo become the club’s second-ever manager.
In terms of transfers, Eduard Atuesta has been sold but LAFC have massively strengthened their roster.
Maxime Crépeau, Franco Escobar and Ismael Tajouri-Shradi will all improve the XI, as will the aforementioned Acosta who’s moved from Colorado.
Despite what last season’s table might suggest, the home fans will be expecting a victory at Banc of California Stadium.
