Will champions NYCFC continue their surge up the Eastern Conference Standings?
Last weekend, despite needing 74 minutes to make the breakthrough, the Boys in Blue comfortably beat San Jose Earthquakes 3-0.
This made it three successive home wins for Ronny Deila’s men, after a 6-0 hammering of Real Salt Lake and a thrilling 5-4 victory against Toronto.
Before this, New York City had only won one of their first five MLS games, partially because their focus was on the CONCACAF Champions League.
Nevertheless, the Pigeons have climbed up to fifth in the east, five points adrift early pace-setters Philadelphia Union.
Now, last year’s MLS Cup winners are aiming for four successive home victories for the first time since last summer when they won seven in the bounce.
Sporting Kansas City meanwhile ended as the best of the west in both 2018 and 2020, but are languishing down in 11th place.
The Wizards did at least fight back from a goal down to draw 2-2 with FC Dallas at Children’s Mercy Park last time out.
The identity of the scorers will be no surprise, Johnny Russell and Dániel Sallói, because, between them, they’ve scored nine of SKC’s last ten goals against Dallas.
Despite this point, Peter Vermes’ side are now winless in five, with both their victories to date coming in front of their own supporters.
Last weekend was the first time they’d scored more than once in a game since last year’s play-offs, still looking for a first road victory since September.
Everything points towards a comfortable home victory at Yankee Stadium.
