Two of Major League Soccer’s most successful clubs go head-to-head in Washington State.
LA Galaxy are USA’s most decorated club having lifted five MLS Cups in their history, although the last of those came in 2014.
Despite finishing second in the Western Conference in each of the last five seasons, Brian Schmetzer’s side currently sit rock bottom of standings.
So far, the Rave Green have lost both MLS games 1-0, first at home to Nashville and then at Real Salt Lake a week ago.
The latter at Rio Tinto Stadium featured a two-hour delay just before half time due to dangerous weather conditions in Utah.
In fairness to the Sounders, they’re focus in on becoming the first MLS side since the Galaxy in 2000 to win the CONCACAF Champions League.
Having hammered Motagua in the round of 16, they welcomed Club León to Seattle on Tuesday night in their quarter-final first leg.
In a real turn up for the books, the Sounders enjoyed an emphatic 3-0 victory; Fredy Montero with a quick-fire brace before Jordan Morris sealed the win.
Thus, Schmetzer’s are in a fantastic position to eliminate León, the side that beat them in Las Vegas in last year’s Leagues Cup Final.
In contrast, LA Galaxy have had a free week to prepare and have two wins out of two in MLS so far.
On the opening weekend, Greg Vanney’s side beat defending champions NYCFC 1-0 at home, thanks to Javier Hernández’s last-minute winner.
Then, on Saturday night, the Galaxy played the role of party-poopers in front of a record-breaking 74,479 crowd at Bank of America Stadium for Charlotte FC’s home opener.
Despite the boisterous support, LA dominated in North Carolina with Efraín Álvarez’s spectacular late strike securing a 1-0 victory.
Will LA Galaxy’s perfect start to the campaign continue at Lumen Field?
