Match Preview for Arsenal v Brentford
Arsenal’s resounding midweek win was not just bad news for Real Madrid but also, potentially, Brentford.
The Gunners’ 3-0 demolition of Madrid in the first leg of their Champions League quarter-final not only puts Mikel Arteta’s side on the brink of the last four but also opens up the possibility of Arsenal fielding a stronger side tomorrow evening.
Had the tie been close, Arteta could have been tempted to rest several key men but a three-goal advantage means there is less jeopardy about a trip to the Santiago Bernabeu.

Arsenal were scintillating against Madrid, putting Carlo Ancelotti’s men to the sword and they will be eager to maintain that momentum as they look to close the gap on Liverpool at the top of the table.
Their hopes of catching Arne Slot’s side, who are 11 points clear with seven games to go, remain remote but it’s likely Arteta will give it another couple matchdays before opting to throw in the towel.
Makeshift striker Mikel Merino, who netted the third goal against Madrid on Tuesday night, told the club’s official website: “Yes, it’s really important to have the momentum to use the energy that we created the other day in the Emirates to keep going and just give the fans another great performance, get the three points and obviously keep the momentum and the tempo for the future games.
“But obviously, really, really focus on Brentford because they are a really tough opponent with a lot of qualities. So, yeah, looking forward to it.”
Brentford make the short trip across north London still harbouring ambitions of a maiden season in Europe.
Thomas Frank’s side continue to make steady progress and were never in any danger of being dragged into a relegation fight this season.
The Bees go into the weekend in 12th place, higher than clubs with much bigger budgets, but are just five points off ninth, which could be enough for continental qualification.
If they are to climb the table, their form will need to improve, however.
Brentford have won just one of their last five in the league – a 2-1 victory at Bournemouth – but are decent on the road, that victory at the Vitality Stadium one of five in a row away from home before a hard-luck defeat at Newcastle earlier this month.
Team News for Arsenal v Brentford
Two-goal hero Declan Rice was taken off late against Madrid, as was the returning Bukayo Saka and they may not be risked.
Ben White could be included in the back four.
Frank reported no new injury worries for his squad and could go with the same XI that drew with Chelsea last weekend.
Aaron Hickey, Igor Thiago and Gustavo Nunes are all are “getting closer” but won’t be included at the Emirates.

Prediction for Arsenal v Brentford
Arsenal are on a high and it’s unlikely they will come off it against Brentford.
We think they will have too much for the Bees and will head to the Bernabeu on the back of another win.
