Match preview

Will Gary O’Neil’s unbeaten start to life at AFC Bournemouth continue?

Since Scott Parker was sacked following the 9-0 drubbing at Anfield, the Cherries have accumulated five points from three matches.

They enjoyed an astonishing 3-2 victory at Nottingham Forest, despite being 2-0 down at half time, before a 1-1 draw with Newcastle a fortnight ago.

Philip Billing breaking the deadlock with a header at St James’ Park.

This leaves Bournemouth 12th in the table, and they’d be delighted to finish anywhere near that position come May.

The same can be said of ninth-place Brentford, who last finished that high in 1938.

This was the Bees’ biggest home league defeat since 2014, showing how competitive they’ve been since promotion to the Premier League.

Brentford beat Bournemouth in the Championship play-off semi-finals en route to promotion in 2021, but have only won two of their last 11 visits to Dorset.

Will there be a winner at Dean Court?

Bournemouth team news

Full-backs Lloyd Kelly and Ryan Fredericks are both unlikely to feature due to injury.

David Brooks, who hasn’t played since 29 September last year after his Hodgkin lymphoma diagnosis, is edging closer to a return.

Ryan Christie played 188 minutes for Scotland during the international break, netting the winner against Ireland, but is expected to start here.

Kieffer Moore, who was on target for Wales, could remain on the bench with Dominic Solanke leading the line.

Brentford team news

Christian Nørgaard and Keane Lewis-Potter are both unlikely to feature due to ongoing injury issues.

In better news, Ethan Pinnock did feature in a behind-closed-doors friendly last weekend, so is close to a return.

Thomas Frank switched to a 3-5-2 against Arsenal but, following a lifeless performance, will almost certainly revert to a 4-3-3 here.

Aaron Hickey went off injured for Scotland last Saturday, but then played the full 90 against Ukraine on Tuesday so is fit to start.

In stark contrast, Ivan Toney was called up but didn’t make his England debut, so will be doubly determined to perform.
