Will Brentford’s unlikely European push continue?
On Wednesday night, the Bees’ impressive season continued, this time beating struggling Southampton 2-0 at St Mary’s.
Ivan Toney broke the deadlock, poking home a corner at the back-post before, in the 97th minute, Toney’s flick-in sent Yoane Wissa through and he made the points secure.
Last weekend, Thomas Frank’s side were beaten 1-0 by Everton, thereby ending their 12-match unbeaten run, a streak that dated back to 23 October.
Nevertheless, Brentford remain in eighth place, targeting a victory that would see them leapfrog Liverpool and Brighton, both of whom are not in action this weekend.
Leicester City meantime have been the club pushing for European places in recent seasons, enjoying back-to-back fifth place finishes, before ending up eighth last year.
Last weekend, the Foxes suffered a fourth successive defeat, this time easily beaten 3-1 by Chelsea at the King Power.
Patson Daka did at least end Leicester’s 318 minute streak without scoring a goal, but to no avail.
On the road, the Foxes have lost four of five matches since the World Cup, failing to score in all three away defeats in 2023.
They have though won each of their last six trips to Brentford, dating back to 1952, with Youri Tielemans scoring a rocket in a 2-1 victory in West London last season.
That streak could come to an end at the Brentford Community Stadium?
Brentford team news
Ivan Toney is one yellow card away from a two-match suspension, as well as having the FA charge hanging over his head.
For now, he’ll continue to lead the line, while January signing Kevin Schade started in the Premier League for the first time against Southampton out-wide.
Vitaly Janelt went off injured in mid-week so Josh Dasilva, who scored a rocket in the reverse fixture, could come into midfield.
Predicted XI (4-3-3): Raya; Hickey, Pinnock, Mee, Henry; Nørgaard, Dasilva, Jensen; Mbuemo, Wissa, Toney.
Leicester City team news
Wout Faes’ red card against Chelsea means he’s suspended so Jonny Evans, who made his first appearance since 8 November off the bench a week ago, could be thrown straight back in.
Both Kelechi Ịheanachọ and scorer Patson Daka started up front last weekend, but Tetê could return, providing more balance from the right-wing, with Harvey Barnes also set to come back in.
Nampalys Mendy could keep his place at the base of midfield, chosen over out-of-favour Wilfried Ndidi.
Predicted XI (4-3-3): Ward; Ricardo, Amartey, Souttar, Castage; Mendy, Dewsbury-Hall, Maddison; Tetê, Barnes, Ịheanachọ.
