These two sides played out a fantastic 3-3 draw when they met in the English top-flight for the first time earlier this season back in November. Since then, the Magpies have severely strengthened their side and sit near the top of the form table while Brentford anchor it after five defeats in six.

Therefore, 101 Great Goals’ prediction for this match is Brentford 1 – 2 Newcastle United and is available at odds of 12/1.

Alternatively, you can bet on any Brentford win at 2.4/1 against the Magpies at home on Saturday.

Match preview

This match could be billed as analytics versus wealth. Brentford famously dug their way out from struggling with debt and into the Premier League in less than ten years. Matthew Benham did so after purchasing the club in 2012 and using the algorithms and data in the same way he made his money as a professional sports gambler.

Newcastle, on the other hand, propelled themselves to the top of football’s rich list at the end of 2021 when purchased by the Saudi Public Investment Fund (PIF). Their estimated £320 billion in wealth dwarfs the estimated £24 billion in wealth of Sheikh Mansour.

Regardless of the financial situations of the clubs off the pitch, or how they are run, there is still a game of football to be played between two sides separated by just two points in the league table.

They say the table doesn’t lie but right now it is hard to argue Brentford are in a better position than the Geordies. Newcastle have two games in hand which, based on current form, you would expect them to get at least two points from those games to put them level with Brentford, if not more.

The Bees are also on a seven-game winless run, picking up just one point in the league since their 2-1 victory over Villa on 2nd January. In contrast, Newcastle are undefeated since their 0-4 hammering by Manchester City before Christmas and have 11 points from a possible 15 in 2022 since the transfer window opened.

The Bees were comfortably beaten last weekend at Arsenal. Expected goals of 1.5 to 0.6 in favour of Arsenal indicates perhaps it was a fair result but the shot count of 24 to 6 reflects how dominant the win was for the Gunners. Christian Nørgaard’s injury-time consolation goal perhaps made the match look closer than it was; it was Brentford’s only shot on target inside the box in the match.

Nørgaard’s is 10/1 to get on the scoresheet again here against Newcastle.

In contrast, Newcastle were more than a match away to West Ham, who are battling for Champions League football next season at present. Expected goals of 0.9 to 0.8 and 14 shots to 11 all in favour of Newcastle shows a close game that perhaps the Magpies had the better of.

It was Joe Willock’s goal that proved enough to secure a point for Newcastle in the end. It was Willock’s (pictured above) first league goal since making his loan move from Arsenal permanent and he is 4/1 to get on the scoresheet again here against Brentford.

Brentford team news

The big team news is the possible selection of Christian Eriksen here for the first time since his collapse on the pitch in the summer during Denmark’s match against Finland in the Euros. He had another behind closed doors friendly on Monday and Thomas Frank feels he is now available for selection for the first time since joining the club in January.

The Bees will be without Mathias Jensen and Julian Jeanvier due to knee injuries while Tarique Fosu is also out after suffering a hamstring injury in training. Zanka is nearing a return to action having missed the last 15 league games due to a thigh problem and should return to team training soon. Ivan Toney (pictured above) is the closest to a return though having missed the last three games due to a lower-leg injury. He faces a late fitness test here.

Newcastle United team news

With both Kieran Trippier (pictured above) and Javier Manquillo ruled out with injury, Eddie Howe has a hole to plug at right back. Emil Krafth started there against the Hammers but was perhaps the Geordies’ weakest performer on the day. Jacob Murphy is another option in that position for Howe.

Matt Ritchie and Jamal Lewis are both ruled out leaving January signing Matt Targett a free-run at the left-back position. Isaac Hayden and Callum Wilson also remain ruled out for Newcastle.

Ryan Fraser is a doubt having come off 10 minutes from time against West Ham with some soreness in his hamstring. Allan Saint-Maximin also remains a doubt having suffered a kick to his calf against Villa keeping him out for the trip to the Hammers.
