Brighton & Hove Albion vs Manchester United match preview
Just 11 days on from their FA Cup semi-final clash at Wembley, these two go head-to-head again.
That afternoon, the two played out a tense goalless draw, meaning a penalty shootout was required.
The first 12 penalties were scored, but it was unlucky number 13 for Solly March, who skied his effort high above the crossbar, before Victor Lindelöf cooly converted, sending Man United through.
So, can Brighton & Hove Albion get revenge this time?
Well, Roberto De Zerbi’s team will certainly be full of confidence, having demolished Wolves 6-0 on Saturday.
Deniz Undav, Pascal Groß and Danny Welbeck all bagged braces as Brighton scored 5+ in a top-flight game for the first time ever.
Brighton kick off in eighth, outside the European spots, but knowing a victory here would see them leapfrog both Aston Villa and Tottenham.
As for Manchester United, they took another step towards rubber stamping a top four finish on Sunday, beating Villa 1-0, with Bruno Fernandes the only scorer at Old Trafford.
The aforementioned Lindelöf was the hero though, with his last-ditch defending preserving the points.
Erik ten Hag’s team have therefore taken 13 points from the last 15 available, so are seven points clear of Liverpool and would leapfrog Newcastle into third with a win.
The Red Devils though have lost all three times they’ve visited the Amex, when supporters have been present, smashed 4-0 in Sussex almost exactly a year ago.
So, will it be a famous night for Brighton, or will Manchester United be too strong again?
Brighton & Hove Albion team news
The most remarkable aspect of Brighton’s 4-0 victory on Saturday is that, arguably, none of their four best players started.
Moisés Caicedo, Alexis Mac Allister and Kaoru Mitoma are all set to return while, with Evan Ferguson out injured, Danny Welbeck will lead the line against his former club.
Facundo Buonanotte, who netted in Nottingham last mid-week, and Deniz Undav, scoring of a brace at the weekend, are set to both miss out.
Pascal Groß has scored six times in ten Premier League meetings with Manchester United, including a brace at Old Trafford in a 2-1 win on the opening weekend of the season.
Jason Steele will continue in goal, chosen over Robert Sánchez who got the nod at Wembley.
Predicted XI (4-2-3-1): Steele; Veltman, Dunk, Webster, Estupiñán; Caicedo, Groß, Mac Allister, March, Mitoma; Welbeck.
Manchester United team news
Even though Lisandro Martínez and Raphaël Varane are sidelined, Harry Maguire still can’t get a game.
Erik ten Hag is likely to continue with Luke Shaw and Victor Lindelöf at centre-back, but Aaron Wan-Bissaka is set to return in place of Tyrell Malacia at full-back.
The Casemiro, Christian Eriksen and Bruno Fernandes midfield-axis continues to be very strong, with Man United yet to lose when that trio have all started.
Antony could return out-wide, displacing Marcel Sabizter, with Marcus Rashford continuing to lead the line.
He’ll b hopeful of bagging his 30th goal of the season, having netted four times in his last seven league appearances against Brighton.
Predicted XI (4-3-3): de Gea; Wan-Bissaka, Lindelöf, Shaw, Dalot; Casemiro, Eriksen, Fernandes; Antony, Sancho, Rashford.
