Match Preview for Chelsea v Tottenham

Chelsea have several key attacking options back for tomorrow night’s crunch game with Tottenham.

The Blues’ form has been derailed by a series of injuries that have deprived them of Nicolas Jackson, Noni Madueke and, latterly, Cole Palmer – setbacks that have seen Chelsea win just four of their last 13 in the Premier League.

From being Liverpool’s closest challengers for the first half of the season, Enzo Maresca’s men are now in a fight to finish in a Champions League qualifying spot.

They started match round 30 in fourth place but just five points ahead of 10th-placed Bournemouth.

Having the attacking trio available is a major boost for Maresca, who said: “We’ve said many times, it is a game for players and when they are not there, you struggle.

“This has happened with us this season, where we had five or six unbelievable months and then had six or seven injuries in a row and we lost something. Now it is good to finish with all of them.

“Since day one, [the players] are giving everything. The attitude has always been top, every day, and even in the last week because they know how important it is from now on. Every game becomes important. We have nine games to go and hopefully we can finish well.”

Tottenham have also struggled with injuries this season, and Maresca believes that can partly explain their poor form.

“For part of the season, they had many injuries. It’s not easy to deal with that,” added the Italian. “They had important players out.”

Spurs remain rooted in the bottom half of the table and boss Ange Postecoglou is hoping a win tomorrow night will give them a platform to finish the season strongly.

The Australian said: “At their place, they’re a tough team to beat. We look forward to the challenge.

“We understand the significance of the fixture, they’re a good side, particularly at home. It’s a good challenge for us and [to] build momentum for the rest of the season.”

Team news for Chelsea v Tottenham

Chelsea will be able to field their first-choice striker for the first time since February 3 with Jackson back in action. Madueke has been absent since February 14 while Palmer missed the 1-0 defeat at Arsenal that preceded the international break.

Midfielder Romeo Lavia misses out, though, after suffering a minor problem in training.

Spurs remain without Dejan Kulusevski and Kevin Danso through injury while Richarlison could return for the weekend game against Southampton.

Predicted line-ups for Chelsea v Tottenham

Tottenham: Vicario; Porro, Romero, Van de Ven, Spence; Bergvall, Bentancur, Maddison; Tel, Son, Solanke

Stats for Chelsea v Tottenham

  • Chelsea have lost just one of their last 12 league games against Spurs
  • No side has earned fewer points in Premier League London derbies this season than Tottenham (10, alongside Brentford)
  • Chelsea have won their last four league games at Stamford Bridge
  • Spurs have lost eight times away from home in the league this season. Only Leicester and Southampton have worse records.

Prediction

Chelsea’s predicted line-up has a formidable look with their three key attacking players fit once again.

Likewise, the Spurs XI will be closer to the one Postecoglou would like to have fielded all season.

There doesn’t seem much to separate them, hence why we’re going for a draw.

Prediction: Chelsea 2-2 Tottenham
