Chelsea vs Luton Town match preview

Can Chelsea claim their first victory of the season?

In Mauricio Pochettino’s first game in charge, the Blues held Liverpool to an encouraging 1-1 draw at home, with Axel Disasi bundling home an equaliser on the cusp of half time.

In truth, they were very unlucky not to win that one.

But then, a week later, Chelsea were beaten 3-1 by West Ham United at the London Stadium.

Carney Chukwuemeka fired home an equaliser on the half hour mark, before the Blues were awarded a penalty, only for Enzo Fernández to see his tame, choreographed effort attempt saved.

It was all down hill from there, with West Ham going in front soon after the interval, before rubber stamping the points in stoppage time, courtesy of a penalty of their own, given away by debutant Moisés Caicedo.

After this, they take on AFC Wimbledon in the League Cup, Nottingham Forest and then Bournemouth, and anything less than four wins out of four will be very concerning for Pochettino and his team.

Given what their hosts have shown so far, Luton Town will be dreaming of a famous Friday night victory in the capital.

The Hatters are back in the top-flight for the first time since 1991/92, having been a non-league side less than a decade ago, a truly remarkable rise.

So far this season, Rob Edwards’ side have only been in action once, but did suffer a serious reality check, hammered 4-1 by Brighton on the South Coast.

Carlton Morris’ penalty, that pulled it back to 3-1 at the time, will go down in history as Luton’s first-ever Premier League goal, even if it counts for very little else.

Here, Luton are dreaming of a first victory at Stamford Bridge since 1986, although they did knock Chelsea out of the Zenith Data Systems Cup in West London on penalties five years later.

These two clubs have actually met in FA Cup ties in each of the last two calendar years, with the Blues prevailing 3-1 at home behind-closed-doors in 2021 and 3-2 at Kenilworth Road 18 months ago.

Anything other than another comfortable Chelsea victory here would be a major surprise.

Chelsea team news

Carney Chukwuemeka, who wass deputising for the injured Christopher Nkunku, scored a magnificent goal in East London last Sunday but then suffered a serious injury of his own, meaning he’s now out too.

With Reece James, Benoît Badiashile, Wesley Fofana, Trevoh Chalobah, Mykhailo Mudryk, and Armando Broja also injured, they’ll need an extra large treatment room at Cobham.

In James’ absence, Malo Gusto will continue at right-wing-back while, having come off the bench last week, the £115 million man Moisés Caicedo could start this time, alongside Enzo Fernández.

Another new midfield arrival Roméo Lavia is likely to be amongst the substitutes.

Predicted XI (3-4-3): Sánchez; Disasi, Thiago Silva, Colwill; Gusto, Fernández, Caicedo, Chilwell; Madueke, Sterling, Jackson.

Luton Town team news

This’ll be Luton Town’s first fixture for 13 days, as Kenilworth Road was not ready to welcome Burnley last weekend, so that clash was postponed.

Pelly Ruddock Mpanzu made history against Brighton the week before, becoming the first player to ever feature in England’s top five divisions all for the same club.

In goal, Thomas Kaminski is likely to keep his place, despite the recent arrival of Tim Krul.

Another new signing Ross Barkley could make his Hatters debut, doing so against his former employers.

Predicted XI (3-5-2): Kaminski; Andersen, Lockyer, Bell; Kaboré, Nakamba, Ruddock Mpanzu, Chong, Giles; Adebayo, Morris.
