‎Despite Manchester City’s recent dominance of English football, the Whites still have the upper hand in this head to head in the Premier League with seven wins to City’s five from 17 encounters.

With this match sandwiched in between City’s UEFA Champions League semi-final matches against Real Madrid, the players may be feeling a little leggy and some rotation will undoubtedly be needed in midfield and attack. They should still have enough in the tank to get a win here though even if it won’t be as comfortable as the victory in Manchester earlier this season.

Therefore, 101 Great Goals’ prediction for this match is Leeds United 1 – 2 Manchester City and is available at odds of 8.5/1.

Match preview

Leeds United welcomes Manchester City to Elland Road on Saturday for this Premier League match.

After a narrow 4-3 win in the home league of the Champions League semi-final against Real Madrid, Manchester City are now 1.2/1 to reach the UEFA Champions League Final once again. They remain one point ahead of Liverpool in the Premier League making them 1.4/1 favourites for the Premier League title and are 3/1 to win the UEFA Champions League & Premier League double.

Before we can talk trophies and Champions League finals though, first they must navigate a difficult match against a rejuvenated Leeds United. Since Leeds’ promotion in the summer of 2020, results have been a very balanced one win apiece and a draw from the three matches. Although, City’s 7-0 pasting of Leeds in Manchester back in December suggests Guardiola had worked out the kinks of Bielsa’s side now and knew how to put them to the sword.

He wasn’t the only one though and with Leeds struggling under Bielsa, they moved quickly to replace him with Jesse Marsch to ensure their return to the Premier League wasn’t a short-lived one of just two seasons. They come into this match in excellent form as one of only three sides undefeated in their last five Premier League matches. The other two are Liverpool on fourteen and Manchester City on seven.

Does that mean this will be a new Leeds with new kinks to work out for Guardiola? He has faced a Jesse Marsch side before with the 6-3 win over his Salzburg being a fantastic display of open and attacking football from both teams.

I am sure neutrals would take another nine-goal thriller right now if offered, although I am not sure the hearts of the Cityzens fans would take it. A 7-0 mauling like the reverse fixture would be much easier on the hearts, especially after the dramatics in midweek with City and Real Madrid playing out a fantastic 4-3 draw at the City of Manchester Stadium. It would also boost the goal difference in case the exceedingly unlikely situation arises where Liverpool and City finish the season on the same points total.

Riyad Mahrez Goalscorer. – Mahrez (pictured above) is Manchester City’s top scorer with eleven goals in Premier League this season. The Algerian was involved in two of the seven goals in the reverse fixture back in December with a goal and an assist and is the 1.95/1 favourite to score against Leeds United once again. Or 4.6/1 to score the game’s opener on Saturday.

Leeds United team news

Adam Forshaw (pictured above) and Tyler Roberts are the two players on the long term injury list for Leeds at the moment. Forshaw fractured his knee cap but should return in time for pre-season. While Roberts has had successful surgery on his thigh injury and is on the road to recovery. Jamie Shackleton is also ruled out with a lower leg injury but should make a return in early May.

Patrick Bamford was due back in training this week after making good progress with his foot injury. His second season back in the Premier League has been a disaster having only made ten of their matchday squads and has just seven league starts. Junior Firpo was an unused substitute last weekend having recovered sufficiently from his knee injury to be named in the squad again. He will hope to win back his left-back shirt from Dallas.

John Stones

Manchester City team news

Manchester City does not have as many injury problems as Leeds but their absences are all in the defence which is giving Pep Guardiola some problems to solve creatively. John Stones (pictured above) lasted just 36 minutes of Tuesday night’s 4-3 win over Real Madrid in an unfamiliar right-back role. He was replaced before halftime by Fernandinho due to an apparent muscle injury.

Joao Cancelo is expected to come back into the starting lineup here to replace him having served his one-game suspension in the Champions League. Although, Kyle Walker could come back into contention should he pass his fitness test before the match on his recovering ankle injury. Benjamin Mendy remains suspended by the club pending an outcome of police investigations. The left-back has been charged with seven counts of rape and faces another court hearing in May in advance of his trial in July.
