Match preview

After their thrilling 2-2 draw at Old Trafford, that concluded just 88 hours ago, what will old rivals Manchester United and Leeds United serve up this time?

On Wednesday night, it took Leeds just 44 seconds to break the deadlock, with Wilfried Gnonto firing past David de Gea.

The visitors then caught Man United cold at the start of the second half too, with Crysencio Summerville’s cross deflected into his own net by Raphaël Varane.

However, the comeback was well and truly on when in-form Marcus Rashford and the returning Jadon Sancho both struck in the space of seven minutes, getting it back to 2-2.

In the end, despite being two up at one stage, Leeds did well to leave with a credible draw.

This was the first match of the post-Jesse Marsch era, with Michael Skubala, Paco Gallardo and Chris Armas taking interim charge here too.

This leaves Leeds hovering just one point above the relegation zone, ahead of six-pointer against Everton and Southampton later this month.

Manchester United meantime start the weekend third, having won 13 successive home games prior to that mid-week draw.

On the road, Erik ten Hag’s team are still searching for their first league win of 2023, following a draw at Crystal Palace and a last-gasp defeat to Arsenal.

These recent slip-ups have derailed the Red Devils’ potential title challenge, but they would leapfrog Man City, even if only for two hours, with a win in Yorkshire.

Leeds haven’t beaten their biggest rivals in the league since 2002, so will that change at Elland Road?

Leeds United team news

Left-back Pascal Struijk and winger Luis Sinisterra both hobbled off injured in the first quarter of Wednesday’s match, making them both massive doubts for this one.

As was the case during the game, Junior Firpo will come in for Struijk, while Crysencio Summerville, who was outstanding on the night, will also start.

With Rodrigo out for two months and Patrick Bamford unlikely to last 90 minutes again, Georginio Rutter could make his full-debut in attack.

Liam Cooper and Marc Roca are also injured, so Weston McKennie will continue alongside USA teammate Tyler Adams in midfield.

Predicted XI (4-3-3): Meslier; Ayling, Koch, Wöber, Firpo; McKennie, Adams, Summerville, Harrison, Gnonto; Rutter.

Manchester United team news

Casemiro is suspended, while Scott McTominay and Christian Eriksen are both injured, leaving Erik ten Hag short of midfield options.

This saw Fred and new signing Marcel Sabitzer start at the base in mid-week, with this likely to be the same here too.

At right-back, Diogo Dalot is fit again, which is just as well because Aaron Wan-Bissaka missed Wednesday’s match due to illness.

In attack, Wout Weghorst touched the ball just 19 times in an hour with his replacement, Jadon Sancho, accumulating almost twice as many touches in half the time.

So, ten Hag is set to stick with the same front three that ended that game.

This would see Alejandro Garnacho on the right, Sancho on the left and the man of the moment Marcus Rashford as the centre-forward.

Predicted XI (4-3-3): de Gea; Dalot, Varane, Martínez, Shaw; Fred, Sabitzer, Fernandes; Garnacho, Rashford, Sancho.
