Match preview
Leicester City welcomes Everton to the King Power Stadium on Sunday for this Premier League match. The Toffees have the upper hand in the head-to-head, with ten wins to Leicester City’s six, from their 31 encounters in the Premier League. However, things are much closer here with Everton only leading the head to head five wins to four in Leicester.
Leicester have had a horrid season in the league and are currently well below expectations in 11th place in the table. Exit from the FA Cup against Championship side Nottingham Forest added further pressure on the manager. However, a run to the semi-finals of the UEFA Europa Conference League before elimination 2-1 on aggregate at the hands of Jose Mourinho’s Roma has been a rare bright spark in an otherwise dull season for the Foxes.
They currently sit on 42 points and will likely finish the season ranked between 9th and 15th depending on the outcome of their final three matches. Each Premier League position will guarantee a few million in the bank to spend in the summer.
Brendan Rodgers may also be playing for his job with question marks being asked if he has taken the club as far as he can. Parallels can be drawn to his time at Liverpool where the peak of the 2013/14 season was followed up with a slide down to sixth, out of Europe and suffering a 6-1 pasting at the hands of Stoke with the brilliance of an ageing Steven Gerrard no longer able to carry the side. Like Gerrard, Jamie Vardy’s brilliance is starting to wane due to age and injuries. This is the first time since 2016/17 that his name is absent from the list of top ten goalscorers in the Premier League. Although, Vardy (pictured above) is still the 5/1 favourite to score the first goal of the game here on Sunday.
The fear for the Leicester board will be that sticking with Rodgers in the summer sees the descent continue, which culminated in his sacking in October of the following season with Liverpool tenth in the table. Saving the manager’s job or earning the money needed to replace the current Leicester players doesn’t sound like the kind of thing that will motivate that extra 5-10% effort out of the players. However, saving the club from relegation, securing Premier League football for next season for yourself as well as avoiding the estimated 25% drop in pay that is often written into contracts will certainly do so. Perhaps it will be this which just gives the Toffees the edge here.
The 2-0 defeat at Anfield in the Merseyside Derby is Everton’s only defeat in their last four matches and with seven points from a possible twelve from their last four games they have started reeling in Jesse Marsch’s Leeds United. This has seen Leeds become 2.3/1 favourites to be relegated despite being two points above Everton, who are 2.5/1 to be relegated.

Leicester City team news
Wilfred Ndidi is ruled out for the rest of the season after having knee surgery following an injury against Rennes. Ryan Bertrand has also had knee surgery but there is some hope he may make it back for the final games of the season. Time is running out though for him to do so.
Brendan Rodgers (pictured above) has been naming an almost entirely changed eleven between the two legs of their UEFA Europa Conference League semi-final against AS Roma. Kasper Schmeichel was the only player from the 3-1 defeat at Spurs last weekend to start the match in Rome on Thursday. With Leicester capable of neither relegation nor European qualification this season, the players are playing for their place in the squad next season or to put themselves in the shop window.

Everton team news
Andros Townsend likely won’t feature for the club again in 2022. The Everton winger suffered an ACL injury in their FA Cup defeat to Crystal Palace towards the end of March. Nathan Patterson will miss the rest of the season after an operation on his ankle that has plagued him all season resulting in him not playing a minute of Premier League action. Ben Godfrey is also on the long term injury list with a thigh problem but unlike the others, has a shot of getting back in time for the end of the season.
There is good news in the midfield area for the Toffees. Donny van de Beek has struggled with thigh and more recently groin problems since joining the club on loan from Manchester United in January. Andre Gomes also missed the Chelsea match with a small groin problem. Both are nearing a return to action though and face a late fitness test to be included in the squad travelling to Leicester.
The matchwinner against Chelsea, Richarlison, (pictured above) lasted just eighty minutes of the 1-0 win before going off injured to be replaced by Salomón Rondón. However, Lampard confirmed after the match it was just a cramp and he would be fine for the trip to Leicester. This means we could see Frank stick with his winning eleven from last weekend.
