Match preview
Jurgen Klopp’s side have only been defeated on one other occasion this season; a 1-0 defeat in Leicester in their final game of 2021. Liverpool’s record in 2022 to date reads played 14, won 12, drew two. They come into this match on a run of 11 straight victories in all competitions, albeit with a victory on penalties at the weekend included in that run.
In contrast, West Ham are perhaps struggling a bit with the hectic fixture load and multiple injuries in defence over the past couple of months. Their last seven matches against Premier League opponents have resulted in three defeats, two draws and two wins.
However, maybe Liverpool are a good matchup for David Moyes’ West Ham. The Reds are the masters of set pieces in the Premier League with 15 goals from them already this season; three more than any other team. The Hammers completely nullified Liverpool from indirect set pieces in the reverse fixture though, with Liverpool having just 0.19 expected goals of chances from them in the 3-2 defeat.
At the other end, the Hammers caused Liverpool all manner of problems with their corners and two of their three goals came from this avenue. To underscore how impressive that is, Liverpool have only conceded four goals from indirect set pieces all season.
It is likely set pieces will be crucial to how this plays out on Saturday. Soucek missing would be huge loss for the Hammers. The question is whether Klopp’s famously adaptive side have learned from how they were exposed by Moyes’ side earlier this season. Also, if they have some new tricks up their sleeve to pose an added threat to the Hammers goal at the other end.
Mohamed Salah Goalscorer. – Salah has three goals in his last two Premier League games and leads the hunt for his third golden boot award by seven goals with 19 in total. After a complete rest in midweek, the Egyptian international is the 1.61/1 favourite to score against West Ham.
Liverpool team news
Thiago got injured in the warmup before last weekend’s League Cup win for Liverpool. He missed the midweek FA Cup match against Norwich and is a huge doubt for this match also. He is expected back in action for the Reds but Roberto Firmino will miss out due to the pelvic problem that has been troubling him the past few weeks.
However, Curtis Jones is expected to be available despite withdrawing at half-time on Wednesday. He notified the medical staff of a slight problem in his thigh and was removed as a precaution. Klopp said in his post-match interview though that it wasn’t a ‘real injury’ suggesting he wouldn’t spend any time out.
The Liverpool manager made ten changes in midweek to the side that started the cup final. The majority of those players, bar perhaps Kelleher, are expected to return to the starting XI here.
West Ham team news
Andriy Yarmolenko has been given compassionate leave due to the war in Ukraine and will be unavailable here. Vladimir Coufal is also ruled out after undergoing a hernia operation and his deputy Ryan Fredericks will also be unavailable due to a groin strain. Therefore, young Ben Johnson is expected to start at right back. The Irons are also without Angelo Ogbonna and Arthur Masuaku due to knee injuries.
Alphonse Areola replacing Lukasz Fabianski between the sticks was the only change to the starting XI on Wednesday to the one who defeated Wolves last weekend. Fabianski is expected to come back into the side here. Tomas Soucek (above) is a doubt having come off needing to be stitched in a nasty head wound in the 3-1 defeat in Southampton. Mark Noble has also picked up a knock during the week and faces a late fitness test.
