Match preview

After a huge, in every sense of the word, victory on Sunday, can Liverpool start to find some form?

At the weekend, Manchester City were in town, with most expecting the champions to leave Merseyside with all three points.

However, the Reds’ makeshift defence stood firm and, even when the Citizens did have the ball in the net, fouls in the build up on both Fabinho and Alisson saw it ruled out.

Then, with 15 minutes to go, came the decisive moment.

Mohamed Salah raced through on goal and, having already been denied by Ederson earlier in the half, made no mistake this time.

Jürgen Klopp’s team held on for the win, just their third in the Premier League this season, and first since August.

West Ham United meantime are 12th, having also endured a mixed start to the campaign.

The Irons came from a goal down to draw with Southampton at St Mary’s on Sunday; Declan Rice equalising.

Before this, David Moyes’ men had won back-to-back games, but their European excursions are clearly having an impact on domestic results.

The Hammers have lost their last five visits to Anfield, their only victory there since 1963 coming seven years ago.

So, will Liverpool be too strong in this one?

Liverpool team news

Jürgen Klopp has injured concerns at both ends of the field right now.

Luis Díaz is already sidelined, with Diogo Jota then taken off on a stretcher in stoppage time at the weekend.

Darwin Núñez or Fábio Carvalho could come into the XI, although Harvey Elliott was excellent on the right-wing against Manchester City.

At the back, Joël Matip is out while Ibrahima Konaté is unlikely to feature here.

So, Joe Gomez is set to remain Virgil van Dijk’s partner, while Trent Alexander-Arnold, who came on in additional time on Sunday, is back sooner than expected after a foot injury.

Thus, he could return in place of James Milner, who deputised admirably, at right-back.

West Ham United team news

At centre-back, Nayef Aguerd is out long-term, Craig Dawson is a doubt due to a dead leg while Kurt Zouma missed Sunday’s trip to Southampton due to illness.

Angelo Ogbonna could return to defence, although David Moyes may be tempted to stick with the back three.

Lucas Paquetá, Jarrod Bowen and Gianluca Scamacca could continue to lead the line, chosen over Michail Antonio, Pablo Fornals, Saïd Benrahma and Manuel Lanzini.

Maxwel Cornet is out injured.
