Manchester United vs Fulham match preview

It’s job done for Manchester United, who will be returning to the Champions League next season.

On Thursday night, the Red Devils climbed up to third place by demolishing a hapless Chelsea 4-1.

Casemiro broke the deadlock, Anthony Martial tapped home from close-range, Bruno Fernandes converted a penalty and then Marcus Rashford completed the scoring, all before the Blues’ consolation towards the end.

That made it three victories on the spin for Erik ten Hag’s team, who now cannot be caught by Liverpool, so have rubber stamped a top four finish.

Now, with the Carabao Cup already in the bag, Man United are aiming to win both domestic cups in the same season for the very first time, a feat only achieved by Arsenal, Liverpool, Chelsea and Man City to date.

Next Saturday, the first-ever Manchester derby FA Cup Final will take place, with the red half certainly traveling down to Wembley as big underdogs.

So, can Fulham take advantage, targeting a first victory in 15 visits to Old Trafford, dating back two decades?

It’s been an exceptional season for the Cottagers, kicking off in tenth place, despite the fact that their last three Premier League campaigns had all ended in relegation.

Last weekend, Marco Silva’s team were involved in an entertaining 2-2 draw with Crystal Palace, with Aleksandar Mitrović bagging a brace at Craven Cottage.

So, having taken seven points from their last three outings, the Whites are guaranteed to finish above local-rivals Chelsea for the first time in 40 years.

When Fulham’ were most-recently victorious at Old Trafford in 2003, Edwin van der Sar was in goal for them, while Lee Clark, Steed Malbranque and Junichi Inamoto were their scorers that afternoon.

Against a mix-and-match Man United side, can the Cottagers spring a surprise?

Manchester United team news

Man United suffered a potentially serious injury blow in mid-week, with Antony stretchered off less than half an hour in, making him a serious doubt for the FA Cup Final.

The Brazilian winger joins Lisandro Martínez, Marcel Sabitzer and Donny van de Beek in the treatment room, while Luke Shaw won’t feature, having been taken off at half time on Thursday with a back issue.

If Erik ten Hag is feeling very sentimental, he could hand Jack Butland his debut for the club in goal, thereby ending David de Gea’s streak of having started every Premier League game since the start of last season.

Key players such as Raphaël Varane, Casemiro, Christian Eriksen and Marcus Rashford, who returned after injury against Chelsea, will surely be proverbially wrapped up in cotton wool.

So, captain Harry Maguire, Tyrell Malacia, Diogo Dalot, Scott McTominay, Fred, Alejandro Garnacho and Wout Weghorst will all be handed starts.

Forgotten man Phil Jones will leave Manchester United after 12 years at the club, so will he feature for the first time in over a year?

Predicted XI (4-3-3): de Gea; Dalot, Maguire, Lindelöf, Malacia; McTominay, Fred, Fernandes; Garnacho, Sancho, Weghorst.

Fulham team news

Fulham are without Tim Ream and former Man United midfielder Andreas Pereira, both of whom suffered season-ending injuries against Man City last month.

Aleksandar Mitrović’s last appearance at Old Trafford, in the FA Cup in March, resulted in his being given an eight-game ban, scoring three times in two appearance since serving that elongated suspension.

If João Palhinha is booked here, he’ll equal the Premier League record of for most yellow cards in a season (14).

This record is held by: Étienne Capoue (18/19), José Holebas (16/17), Lee Cattermole (14/15), Cheick Tioté (10/11), Robbie Savage (01/02) and Mark Hughes (98/99).

Predicted XI: (4-2-3-1): Leno; Tete, Adarabioyo, Diop, Robinson; Palhinha, Reed, Wilson, Cairney, Willian; Mitrović.
