Match preview

A week on from that horror show at Anfield, can Manchester United get their Premier League campaign back on track?

Last Sunday, the Red Devils were smashed 7-0 by Liverpool, conceding six in the second half, the club’s heaviest defeat since Boxing Day 1931.

Before this, Erik ten Hag’s team had lost just two of 17 league fixtures, climbing up to third, very much in pole position to remain there.

Since then, Man United have had the chance to bounce back, taking on Real Betis in the Europa League on Thursday.

Marcus Rashford broke the deadlock early, only for some poor distribution to give Betis an equaliser just before half time.

Nevertheless, second half goals from Antony, Bruno Fernandes and Wout Weghorst secured a 4-1 win, leaving them in a commanding position ahead of the return leg at the Benito Villamarín.

Southampton are winless in seven visits to Old Trafford, dating back to 2016, but did manage a 1-1 draw there 13 months ago.

Right now, following Bournemouth’s shock win over Liverpool on Saturday, the Saints kick off bottom of the table, with their 11-year stay in the top division under serious threat.

Having said that, Rubén Sellés’s side did actually win their last game, beating Leicester 1-0 a week ago, thanks to Carlos Alcaraz’s driven finish.

Also, last month, Southampton managed to beat Chelsea at Stamford Bridge, but this’ll be an entirely tougher preposition.

Anything other than a routine home win would come as a surprise.

Manchester United team news

Erik ten Hag is likely to go strong again, potentially able to rotate in Seville this forthcoming Thursday, given the lead his team will take with them.

Marcel Sabitzer and Anthony Martial both missed Thursday’s drubbing of Betis, with neither likely to be back here.

Diogo Dalot got he nod over Aaron Wan-Bissaka at right-back, but that’s one potential area for rotation.

Having scored his first Old Trafford goal in mid-week, Wout Weghorst will lead the line, while Antony’s goal could see him keep his place over Jadon Sancho.

Predicted XI: (4-3-3): de Gea; Dalot, Varane, Martínez, Shaw; Casemiro, Fred, Fernandes; Antony, Rashford; Weghorst.

Southampton team news

Rubén Sellés has had over a week to prepare for this game, hoping that will be to their advantage.

James Ward-Prowse will equal David Beckham’s Premier League record for free-kick goals if he can bag yet another here.

Kyle Walker-Peters started over at left-back last weekend, with Ainsley Maitland-Niles on the right, so it’ll be interesting if that remains the case.

The match-winner in that game Carlos Alcaraz hurt his knee celebrating, meaning he is a doubt.

Ché Adams, who scored at Old Trafford last season, will continue to lead the line, chosen over Paul Onuachu.

Predicted XI (4-5-1): Bazunu; Walker-Peters, Bednarek, Bella-Kotchap, Walker-Peters; Lavia, Ward-Prowse, Elyounoussi, S Armstrong; Sulemana, Adams.
