Newcastle United vs Arsenal match preview

Arsenal’s top four hopes fell apart on Tyneside 356 days ago, so will Newcastle now end their faint hopes of the title?

On Tuesday night, the Gunners got back to winning ways, smashing hapless Chelsea 3-1 at home.

The game was over by half time, with captain Martin Ødegaard firing home two near-identical goals, both teed up by Granit Xhaka, before Gabriel Jesus bundled home a third.

This though feels like too little too late for Mikel Arteta’s team, following three successive draws and then a 4-1 mauling at the Etihad against title rivals Manchester City.

So, Arsenal kick off four points below the leaders, knowing that all they can do is win their remaining four matches and hope Man City slip-up twice, which seems unlikely.

This is, without doubt, the Gunners’ toughest remaining fixture, facing a team who look set to join them in next season’s Champions League.

As a result, Eddie Howe’s team have won eight of their last nine Premier League matches, leaving them third, six points clear of Liverpool with a game in hand.

The Toon Army need just eight more points from their remaining five fixtures to mathematically make sure of returning to the Champions League after two decades away.

Newcastle have lost just three of 30 Premier League home matches since Halloween 2021, these defeats coming at the hands of Manchester City and Liverpool twice.

Arsenal meantime are seeking to avoid going three games without a victory in this fixture for the first time since 2011, a sequence that features that 4-4 draw.

Will the Toon Army roar their team onto victory at St James’ Park?

Newcastle United team news

Sean Longstaff is set to miss the rest of the season, sustaining a knock at Goodison, so an unchanged midfield trio will be deployed.

Anthony Gordon could make back-to-back starts for the first time since arriving from Everton, although Allan Saint-Maximin is hopeful of returning to the matchday squad.

Jacob Murphy and Alexander Isak will complete the forward line, chosen over fit again Miguel Almirón and in-form Callum Wilson.

Joelinton has been booked 12 times so far this season, the joint-most of any player; the single-season Premier League record is 14, jointly held by six players:

Étienne Capoue (18/19), José Holebas (16/17) and Lee Cattermole (14/15), Cheick Tioté, during his time at Newcastle, (10/11), Robbie Savage (01/02) and Mark Hughes (98/99).

Predicted XI (4-3-3): Pope; Trippier, Schär, Botman, Burn; Willock, Joelinton, Guimarães; Murphy, Gordon; Isak.

Arsenal team news

Arsenal supporters are sweating over the availability of Gabriel, after he was taken off with a groin injury in mid-week.

With William Saliba already sidelined due to a back issue, they’d be very short of centre-back options if the Brazilian isn’t available.

Assuming Gabriel is good to go, he’ll be partnered by Jakub Kiwior, after he made his full-Premier League debut, displacing Rob Holding, against Chelsea.

In all, Mikel Arteta made three changes to his team on Tuesday, with Jorginho coming in for Thomas Parety, while Leandro Trossard also started over Gabriel Martinelli.

Jorginho was excellent against his former side so could keep his place, especially when considering the fact that Partey has been poor since the international break.

Martinelli meanwhile is likely to return in attack, alongside Martin Ødegaard, who took his tally to 14 for the season this week.

Predicted XI (4-1-4-1): Ramsdale; White, Kiwior, Gabriel, Zinchenko; Jorginho, Xhaka, Ødegaard; Saka, Martinelli; Jesus.
