Match preview

Will last weekend’s emphatic victory kick-start Newcastle United’s season?

The Magpies hadn’t won since the opening day, but rectified that in some style on Saturday, demolishing Fulham 4-1 at Craven Cottage.

Admittedly, the home side did go down to ten-man after just eight minutes, but the Toon Army don’t care, celebrating their biggest away win since 1 July 2020.

Callum Wilson and Sean Longstaff on target, but the star of the show was Miguel Almirón, scoring twice, including a sublime volley; an early contender for goal of the season?

This lifts Eddie Howe’s team up to seventh, confident of another victory here.

Brentford meantime played out a very uneventful goalless draw with Bournemouth a week ago.

The Bees are winless in six visits to Tyneside, dating back to 1934, so can they change that statistic at St James’ Park?

Newcastle United team news

Allan Saint-Maximin and Alexander Isak both remain sidelined, as does Jonjo Shelvey.

Joelinton was, surprisingly, only on the bench last weekend, but could come in for Sean Longstaff.

Meanwhile, Miguel Almirón has already scored three goals this season; the most he’s managed in an entire campaign for Newcastle is four.

Brentford team news

Pontus Jansson hobbled off last weekend so is a doubt, while Ethan Pinnock also sidelined.

This’ll lead to a reshuffle at the back, with Kristoffer Ajer shifting across, alongside Ben Mee, and Aaron Hickey returning at right-back

The latter would miss Friday night’s game against Brighton if he is booked here.

Mikkel Damsgaard started a Premier League match for the first time at Bournemouth and will be hoping to keep his place.
