Match preview
After a fantastic run of form since the January transfer window opened, Newcastle managed to steer themselves out of the relegation zone and seemingly to safety after a run of six wins in seven matches.
However, the recent run of three defeats in a row, coupled with Everton, Burnley and Watford all picking up some points, had people asking if they could get sucked into the relegation conversation once more. The 1-0 win last weekend came at a good time to bat those questions away for the time being. They are currently ten points above Burnley though, who have a game in hand.
While that should be enough, the sooner Eddie Howe can get this side mathematically safe the better. Injuries to key players are starting to mount up with arguably four first-choice players currently out injured. Although, Joe Willock is expected to return to action soon enough.
Injuries have also wreaked havoc on Leicester’s season. It looked like they had little to play for in the Premier League but a surge of four wins and a draw in the last six games has seen them make some gains in the table.
With two or three games in hand on many of the teams above them, they have an outside chance of breaking into the top six and grabbing a place in the Europa League or Europa Conference League play-off round for next season. They were 13th and 18 points adrift of sixth but now sit 9th and 11 points from sixth with three matches in hand on West Ham who currently occupy it.
Leicester are one of only three sides to have beaten Newcastle by a four-goal margin this season. The Magpies’ recent loss to Spurs is another and the matches shared a lot of similarities. In both games, a goal conceded just before halftime seemed to cause a domino effect in the second half.
At the absolute minimum, Howe will want to see a stronger mentality from his side here to stay in the game even if things are starting to slip away from them. There is also the Bruno Guimarães conundrum to solve. Their record signing has lost in three of his four starts for the club and have a record of four wins, one draw and a defeat from his six cameo appearances.
Is Howe struggling to find a way to build his midfield around his star signing or is this a mere variance in a small sample of matches while the player is still settling in? Many considered him the man of the match last weekend against Wolves suggesting things are starting to click into place for the Brazilian.

Kieran Trippier remains ruled out with a metatarsal fracture. Although Newcastle are hopeful he will feature again for the club at some point before the end of the season. Callum Wilson (pictured above) is also on the long term injury list with a calf injury that has kept him off the pitch so far in 2022. A late April to early May return is hoped for here also. Isaac Hayden and Jamal Lewis also haven’t featured for a long time but should be returning to training soon.
Joseph Willock missed last weekend’s 1-0 win over Wolves with a knee injury. He has taken an injection for the pain and there is a slight chance he is involved here. Ryan Fraser lasted just 13 minutes of that Wolves match though before coming off with a suspected hamstring injury which would suggest he will be out for at least two weeks, if not longer. Miguel Almirón will hope to replace him in the starting XI here.
Leicester City team news
Wilfred Ndidi is ruled out for the rest of the season after having knee surgery following an injury against Rennes. Jamie Vardy (pictured above), Danny Ward and Ryan Bertrand also remain ruled out here with long-term knee injuries. Although, there is some hope the trio will be involved again at some point this season.
Boubakary Soumare has been in and out of the squad lately with some groin pain and has managed just one start in 2022. Ayoze Perez has been out of favour lately and is an unused substitute more often than not. Although, illness kept him out of the squad that won 2-1 against Palace at the weekend. The pair face a late fitness test to be included on the bench here.
