The Reds have the strong upper hand in the head to head, with 30 wins to Newcastle United’s 11, from their 53 Premier League encounters. However, it would appear home advantage is crucial to whether or not the Magpies can get anything from the game, with only one of their eleven wins coming away from St James’ Park. This all suggests it will be a closer game than the 3-1 win earlier this season at Anfield.

Therefore, 101 Great Goals’ prediction for this match is Newcastle United 1 – 2 Liverpool and is available at odds of 8/1.

Alternatively, you can bet on any Newcastle United win at 7.5/1 against Liverpool at home on Saturday.

Or, back any away win for Liverpool at 1.4/1 here at St James’ Park.

You can find odds of 4.75/1 for any draw between Newcastle United and Liverpool on Saturday.

They are also still in with a chance of winning the Premier League this season. Although, they will need at least one favour from elsewhere in Manchester City’s five remaining games. If they win all their remaining games and City slips somewhere on their run-in, odds of 3.5/1 can be had for the Reds to win a domestic treble of Premier League, League Cup and FA Cup.

After a comfortable midweek win in the first leg of the UEFA Champions League Semi Finals against Villarreal, they are now the favourites at 1.909/1 to win the UEFA Champions League. Or, if you believe they can do the seemingly impossible and become the first side to win the quadruple of Premier League, Champions League, League Cup and FA Cup, odds of 7/1 can be found.

Match preview

Newcastle United welcomes Liverpool to St James’ Park in Newcastle upon Tyne on Saturday for this Premier League match.

In the late 1990s, this was usually one of the treats of the football calendar. Many a high scoring entertaining game was played out between these sides finishing 4-1, 4-2 or even 4-3. Twice! Sadly for Newcastle, they were on the wrong end of the results in all four of those “Premier League Classics” you see on Sky Sports.

The Reds have also inflicted some heavy defeats on the Geordies in their own backyard in the last 15 years. Rafa Benitez’s Reds 2008/09 title challenge season saw his side come to St James’ and hand out a 1-5 hammering with Steven Gerrard absolutely unplayable scoring two and assisting two of the five goals in the match.

Brendan Rodgers’ side escalated the scoreline further when they turned up in 2013 to inflict a 0-6 mauling on Alan Pardew’s Magpies. Jordan Henderson – the current Liverpool captain and the only starting player remaining from either side that day – put in one of his best performances in a red shirt as he scored two and set up one for his side.

In the Jurgen Klopp era, Liverpool have really started to dominate this head to head though. Steve McClaren’s Newcastle picked up a 2-0 in one of Klopp’s first Premier League matches in his career with a Martin Skrtel own-goal being the deciding goal of the game. If that ultimately highlighted he had no future in a Klopp defence, Gini Wijnaldum auditioned for a future place in the Reds midfield by scoring a late second for the Geordies in injury-time.

Since that day, it has been almost one-way traffic in this fixture with Liverpool unbeaten in the last ten in this head to head with a record of six wins from the last eight. The two draws both came behind closed doors which will have ‘Pool fans asking if a team drops points in the Tyne but nobody is around to see it, did it really happen?

Of course, Newcastle are at the beginning of their own revolution with new owners coming in and Eddie Howe replacing Steve Bruce as manager. The results speak for themselves with Newcastle quickly climbing off the bottom of the table and along with Liverpool are the only side with a perfect home record over the last six matches.

Wolves in eighth were the only side above Newcastle from that run and Liverpool will pose questions of Howe’s new look Geordies that none of those sides have the players capable of asking. It will be an interesting strength test for them to see what they are capable of with an eye on the future now that Premier League safety is virtually guaranteed.

Mohamed Salah Goalscorer. – Mo Salah (pictured above) has enjoyed this fixture over the years and scored the second and ultimately winning goal when they met back in December. It made it six goals in nine games in this head to head for Mo. Although, only one of those six came here at St. James’ Park. This sees the Egyptian King start the match as the 4/1 favourite to score the game’s opener on Saturday. Or 1.909/1 to bag a goal at any time during the game against the Magpies.

Newcastle United team news

Ryan Fraser, Isaac Hayden and Jamal Lewis all remain ruled out for the Magpies. Fraser has missed the last three games with a hamstring injury. A scan showed there is no major tear and he now faces a race against time to get fit before the end of the season. Isaac Hayden is due to return to training this week after missing half the season so far with a knee injury. However, Jamal Lewis has needed another operation to fix his long-standing groin problem so remains on the long term injury list.

Kieran Trippier has been absent lately with a metatarsal fracture. However, Eddie Howe confirmed in his press conference that he is back on the grass with his boots on and just needs to build up his fitness but again. Callum Wilson (pictured above) is also back in training after missing all of 2022 so far due to a calf injury. The pair face a late fitness test to be included in the squad here.

Liverpool team news

The Reds came through their midweek game against Villarreal with no new injuries worries. Curtis Jones and Konstantinos Tsimikas both dropped out from the squad after the Merseyside Derby due to a virus. They will be monitored in the lead up to this match to see if they are clear of the illness and fit enough to come back into contention.

Roberto Firmino (pictured above) also missed the match due to a foot injury sustained in the closing moments of the 2-3 win over Manchester City in the FA Cup. Despite a scan revealing no serious damage, it is a painful injury preventing him from training and playing and is being assessed on a match to match basis. He likewise faces a late fitness test to be in the squad to travel to Newcastle.
