Nottingham Forest vs Burnley match preview

Just 19 days after the same two clubs met at the same venue in the Carabao Cup, those beside the River Trent may expirence a sense of déjà vu.

Less than three weeks ago, it was actually Burnley who progressed through that tie, with Zeki Amdouni’s 90th minute winner sparking wild celebrations from the travel supporters housed in the Bridgford End.

Will this Monday night Premier League fixture go the same way?

Despite that League Cup defeat, Nottingham Forest come into this rematch as firm favourites to prevail, not least because they beat Chelsea at Stamford Bridge in their last outing.

Anthony Elanga the match-winner in West London, as Forest deservedly picked up three points.

This though was a rare victory on the road for the Reds, who’ve more generally relied on home games for points.

Dating back to last season, Forest have now won four successive Premier League home games for the first time since January 1996, last winning five such fixtures on the spin in May 1991.

In stark contrast, any point will do for Burnley, with the Championship champions still yet to get off the mark, sat rock bottom of the table.

Before the international break, Vincent Kompany’s team were hammered 5-2 by Tottenham at Turf Moor, despite actually taking a fourth minute lead through Lyle Foster.

Following defeats at the hands of Manchester City and Aston Villa, all coming at home, the Clarets have shipped 11 goals in three outings, so are currently on course to concede 139 goals this season.

For context, the Premier League record is Swindon Town, who conceded 100 times in a 42-game season, specifically 93/94, suggesting, while it is a small sample size, there’s certainly room for improvement.

The good news for Clarets fans ahead of this one is, including that aforementioned League Cup tie, their team is unbeaten in seven meetings with Nottingham Forest, dating back to 2012.

On the flip side, Burnley haven’t won back-to-back visits to the City Ground since 1960, and the Reds certainly come into this one as firm favourites to pick up three points.

Nottingham Forest team news

After a much quieter summer by the River Trent, Forest then went mad on deadline day, with eight players arriving.

These are Odysseas Vlachodimos, Nuno Tavares, Murillo, Andrew Omobamidele, Ibrahim Sangaré, Nicolás Domínguez, Callum Hudson-Odoi and Divock Origi.

The fact Steve Cooper could almost name a starting XI of debutants is frankly ludicrous.

In goal, Vlachodimos looks set to be the new number one, taking over from Matt Turner, who’s done very little to justify losing his spot.

Sangaré meanwhile is the signing Forest fans are most excited about, as he really improves their midfield options.

In attack, Taiwo Awoniyi has scored in each of those aforementioned four successive home victories, so will he keep that streak going?

Predicted XI (5-2-3): Vlachodimos; Aurier, Worrall, Boly, Felipe, Aina; Danilo, Sangaré; Gibbs-White, Hudson-Odoi, Awoniyi.

Burnley team news

Having scored two of Burnley’s three goals this season, Lyle Foster will keep his place in attack, alongside Zeki Amdouni, who’s already scored one dramatic winner at the City Ground.

Vincent Kompany’s team have played wide-open, expansive football so far, and it’ll be intersting to see if they stick with that, in light of results.

Predicted XI (4-4-2): Trafford; Roberts, O’Shea, Beyer, Al-Dakhil; Cullen, Berge, Guðmundsson, Koleosho; Foster, Amdouni.
