Match Preview for Liverpool v Everton

Liverpool can take another step towards clinching the Premier League title with victory against Merseyside neighbours Everton tomorrow night.

Arne Slot’s side will be itching to get into the Toffees, partly because of the controversial end to their last meeting earlier in the season, and partly due to the fact they suffered two hugely damaging defeats in their last two games.

Liverpool exited the Champions League after a penalty shoot-out defeat to Paris Saint-Germain before going down 2-1 to Newcastle in the EFL Cup final.

Their hopes of a domestic and continental treble are therefore over but they won’t be lacking motivation at Anfield against their rivals from across Stanley Park.

Everton snatched a last-gasp equaliser in the final derby to be played at Goodison Park in February, James Tarkowski’s goal prompting angry scenes that led to red cards for Curtis Jones and Abdoulaye Doucoure as well as Slot and his assistant Sipke Hulshoff.

Slot apologised in the immediate aftermath but admitted today he can’t guarantee there won’t be a repeat.

He said: “I would be so surprised if I ever experienced eight minutes of so many controversial decisions at our disadvantage again. If it happens I hope I act differently, but I can’t promise. But I don’t think I am going to experience that again. But you never know, football is unpredictable.”

Everton have been reinvigorated under David Moyes and will head to Anfield unbeaten in nine league games, a run that has ended any lingering relegation fears.

Team News for Liverpool v Everton

Liverpool could be at close to full strength, bar the ongoing absence of right-back Trent Alexander-Arnold due to an ankle problem. Jarell Quansah is likely to deputise again with Conor Bradley not fit enough to start.

Alisson is set to return in goal after sustaining a head injury on international duty with Brazil while Slot also confirmed defensive midfielder Ryan Gravenberch was fit.

Everton have their own issues with several players missing, although Iliman Ndiaye and Dwight McNeil have returned to light training.

Vitalii Mykolenko is doubtful, meaning Ashley Young is likely to retain his place at left-back.

Striker Dominic Calvert-Lewin is injured.

Prediction for Liverpool v Everton

Slot will have his side revved up for this one given the recent setbacks and the desire to get one over on their local rivals.

If Liverpool re-discover their A-game it will be hard for Everton to cope, no matter their improvement under Moyes.

Everton will be happy to sit back and play on the counter but it is a dangerous game to give Liverpool too much of the ball.

We think it will be close but it’s hard to imagine the home side won’t have enough to get over the line.

Prediction: Liverpool 2-1 Everton
