Match preview

Can Southampton make the most of this rearranged mid-week fixture and climb out of the relegation zone?

On Sunday, the Saints held Manchester United to a goalless draw, but were probably frustrated not to leave with all three points.

Up against ten-men for over 70 minutes, Theo Walcott went close twice, James Ward-Prowse clipped the cross bar with a trademark free-kick before Kyle Walker-Peters thwacked the post late on.

So, Rubén Sellés’ side remain rock bottom of the table, but would leapfrog Leeds, Bournemouth, West Ham and Leicester with a win here.

In contrast, Brentford are looking to get their European push back on track.

At the weekend, the Bees were beaten 1-0 by Everton at Goodison, with the only goal coming a mere 35 seconds in.

Nevertheless, Brentford remain ninth, knowing a win on the South Coast would see them move above rivals Fulham and, potentially, Brighton, depending on the simultaneous result in Sussex.

The Bees were spanked 4-1 at St Mary’s 14 months ago, but this one is unlikely to go the same way.

Southampton team news

Theo Walcott’s bright display at Old Trafford is surely enough to earn him a start here.

Jan Bednarek and Armel Bella-Kotchap will continue at centre-back, having started all four league matches under Rubén Sellés so far.

Ché Adams was on target in this fixture last season and will be looking for his tenth of the season in this one.

Predicted XI (4-5-1): Bazunu; Walker-Peters, Bednarek, Bella-Kotchap, Perraud; Lavia, Alcaraz, Ward-Prowse, Walcott, Sulemana; Adams.

Brentford team news

Yoane Wissa could return up front, displacing Mikkel Damsgaard, alongside Bryan Mbuemo and Ivan Toney, the latter having bagged his 16th of the season in the derby win over Fulham.

Aside from that, Thomas Frank could name an unchanged XI, featuring fit against Aaron Hickey and key midfielder Christian Nørgaard.

Predicted XI (4-3-3): Raya; Hickey, Pinnock, Mee, Henry; Nørgaard, Janelt, Jensen; Mbuemo, Wissa, Toney.
