Southampton and Leeds are both tipped to be circling the plughole of the Premier League table come the end of the season, and they experienced very different opening days to the campaign last week.
Being drawn to play against an improved and much-fancied Tottenham side on the opening weekend was always going to be tough, and after taking an early lead Saints thought they were going to get off to a dream start, but sadly the rest of the game went to form.
A 4-1 defeat suggested there could be more bad days on the horizon and unless they invest significantly in their squad, they look short on the type of quality that will be able to pull them out of trouble, but if ever there was a game in which to get a true test of their qualities, it’s against Leeds.
Not only are the two sides expected to be direct competitors this season, but they both share former RB Leipzig coaches in Ralph Hasenhuttl and Jesse Marsch.
The latter enjoyed a more satisfying opener than the former thanks to a 2-1 win over Wolves, and if they are to avoid the same relegation fright as last year then they will want to get as many victories under their belt as early as they can, and they will fancy a trip to St Mary’s as the perfect follow-up.
They have an extra boost with Adam Forshaw, Luis Sinisterra and Liam Cooper returning to selection after pre-season injuries, while Dan James is also available after suspension.
