Match preview: Southampton vs Newcastle United

Southampton suffered a first defeat in five on the weekend as they were well beaten by Aston Villa.

Steven Gerrard’s side won 4-0 at Villa Park as they thrashed the Saints.

The defeat leaves Southampton 9th in the table.

Ralph Hassenhuttl’s team have been strong at home winning five of their last six matches at St Mary’s.

Newcastle eight unbeaten

Newcastle United extended their unbeaten run to eight matches on Saturday.

Eddie Howe’s men secured another win as they defeated Brighton.

The Tyneside club won 2-1 at the St James’ Park to climb into 14th place.

They are also now seven points above the bottom three.

Southampton team news

Southampton are set to have a trio of players return from injury.

Mohamed Salisu, Shane Long and Nathan Tella are all back.

Lyanco and Alex McCarthy are still both unavailable.

Matt Ritchie is back available from a knee injury.

Kieran Trippier, Callum Wilson, Isaac Hayden, Jamal Lewis and Federico Fernandez all remain sidelined.
