Match preview
This may only be Nathan Jones’ 14th game in charge of Southampton, but is he already on the brink of the sack?
Last weekend, the Saints were demolished 3-0 at the Brentford Community Stadium, rarely threatening until it was far too late.
After the game, Jones was quick to blame everyone who isn’t himself, and has seemingly lost the supporters very quickly.
Under Jones, Southampton have reached the Carabao Cup semi-finals, ousted by Newcastle, and will host Grimsby in the FA Cup fifth round.
In the Premier League though, the Saints have now lost eight of their last nine, only beating Everton since 19 October.
This leaves them rock bottom of the table, in desperate need of a first home win since 30 August.
Julen Lopetegui’s team moved up to 15th last weekend by smashing Liverpool 3-0 at Molineux; Craig Dawson on target on debut, before Rúben Neves completed the rout.
That made it back-to-back home wins for Wolves, who’ve taken ten points from six post-World Cup fixtures.
Will Wolves add to Southampton’s misery by claiming a victory on the South Coast?
Southampton team news
Under Nathan Jones, Southampton’s XIs have been famously tough to predict, which surely must be part of the reason behind their horrendous league form.
Deadline day signings Kamaldeen Sulemana and Paul Onuachu both came off the bench against Brentford, so both are in contention to start here.
The latter is the tallest player in the Premier League, standing at 6 ft 7 in (201cms).
With Duje Ćaleta-Car and Armel Bella-Kotchap both sidelined, Jan Bendark, despite spending the first half of the season on loan at Aston Villa, is likely to start at centre-back.
When Roméo Lavia was hooked in the 65th minute, this decision was booed by the away section, so expect to see the teenager in the XI again here.
Predicted XI (4-2-3-1): Bazunu; Bree, Bednark, Salisu, Perraud; Lavia, Diallo, Ward-Prowse, Edozie, Sulemana; Onuachu.
Wolverhampton Wanderers team news
Following last weekend’s impressive win, there’s little reason for Julen Lopetegui to tinker.
Mario Lemina was excellent in midfield, and will feature against the club he made 52 appearances for here.
Craig “Ballon” Dawson also impressed on debut, scoring the second, meaning he’s now netted in the Premier League for four clubs: West Brom, Watford, West Ham and Wolves.
Daniel Podence was the match-winner when Southampton visited Molineux in September and could return to the starting line-up here.
Predicted XI (4-3-3): José Sá; Semedo, Dawson, Kilman, Aït-Nouri; Lemina, Neves, Nunes; Sarabia, Cunha, Podence.
