Tottenham vs Bournemouth match preview

Tottenham are back in action three days after one of the worst performances of their troubled season when they host a Bournemouth side 10 points above them in the Premier League on Sunday.

Spurs had one of the six attempts on target between the teams on their way to a first-leg defeat at AZ Alkmaar in the Europa League last 16 on Thursday – a result manager Ange Postecoglou called “a reflection of where we are”.

“The best way is to put it right at the weekend,” added Postecoglou. “It’s about consistency and performance, not about raising our worst level.

“There are different ways of tackling those challenges. At the bare minimum, we [must] compete and get the base line performances up.”

Bournemouth have suffered consecutive league defeats but remain one of eight teams firmly in contention for European qualification behind the top two of Liverpool and Arsenal.

The Cherries enjoyed a dramatic home win last Saturday, beating Wolves 5-4 on penalties in the FA Cup fifth round after a 1-1 draw at Vitality Stadium.

“It’s difficult to explain that we didn’t win the game in the 90 minutes,” manager Andoni Iraola said afterwards, adding that “everything” had “gone against” his side.

“Luckily for us, we could finish it very happy and celebrate that we are in the last eight –  that is a good achievement.”

Spurs vs Bournemouth team news

Former Bournemouth top scorer Dominic Solanke lasted 20 minutes as a late substitute before limping off against Alkmaar, but Postecoglou has described the striker’s back injury as a “knock” and has not ruled him out.

Fellow defenders Micky van de Ven and Cristian Romero remained unused substitutes against the Dutch side in a late decision by Postecoglou.

“When I saw the pitch, I decided I wasn’t going to risk them,” the Australian explained. “A couple of extra days’ training and they will be in the mix.”

Ben Davies has “progressed” and has “a chance” of returning from injury, but defender Radu Dragusin, attacker Dejan Kulusevski and forward Richarlison are among Postecoglou’s other absentees.

Centre-back Illia Zabarnyi will serve the final match of a three-game suspension for Bournemouth, but right-back Julian Araujo is available following hamstring surgery.

Ryan Christie is a doubt with a groin injury that kept the midfielder out against Wolves, while defenders Marcos Senesi and Adam Smith and forward Enes Unal remain out.

Spurs vs Bournemouth prediction

With little more than pride to play for in the league, the visit of a dangerous Bournemouth team on course for the best season in their history looks ominous for Tottenham.

Only the top three have taken more away points than Iraola’s side, who had 19 of the 30 attempts between the teams in their 2-1 defeat at Brighton & Hove Albion on February 25, when Justin Kluivert equalised with a strike that has been nominated for the Premier League goal of the month award.

As much as the defeat at Alkmaar has placed more scrutiny on Spurs, Postecoglou and his players also know that the second leg on Thursday is the game that can keep their campaign alive.

Bournemouth won this fixture 1-0 at home in December and a repeat of that result would not be a surprise.
