Real Madrid are a step away from what would be a 41st Copa del Rey final as they seek to claim a treble for the first time in their illustrious history, and Tuesday’s meeting with Real Sociedad will be regarded as the easiest test they have ahead of them.

Madrid are three points behind Barcelona in LaLiga and face a Champions League quarter-final with Arsenal, with the first leg in London next week.

But before they can return focus the two competitions they have won more than anyone else, Madrid must finish the job against Sociedad, having claimed a 1-0 win in the first leg of the semi-final in San Sebastián.

Carlo Ancelotti’s men were far from convincing in their latest league victory over Leganes last Saturday. The LaLiga strugglers stunningly took a 2-1 lead into half-time at the Santiago Bernabeu, with only a superb free-kick from Kylian Mbappe preventing Madrid from having to settle for a point after Jude Bellingham had levelled matters early in the second half.

However, this season’s evidence suggests Madrid should not have to worry too much about Sociedad producing a turnaround.

Despite boasting two of the heroes of Spain’s Euro 2024 triumph in Martin Zubimendi and Mikel Oyarzabal, Sociedad have found goals very hard to come by this season. Only two LaLiga teams have scored fewer than Sociedad’s 27 league goals.

Sociedad beat one of those teams, Real Valladolid, 2-1 at the weekend but, having failed to score in their last three meetings with Los Blancos, the chances of an upset in the capital appear slim.

Team news for Real Madrid v Real Sociedad

Andriy Lunin is Madrid’s Copa del Rey goalkeeper and will likely continue in that role, with Thibaut Courtois left out of the squad having the win over Leganes with a muscle issue.

Vinicius Junior and Rodrygo could feature from the start after being left on the bench against Leganes following their exertions for Brazil in the international break. Aurelien Tchouameni and Federico Valverde are also contenders to return to the XI.

Brais Mendez is a doubt for Sociedad because of a foot injury. Jon Pacheco (thigh) is a doubt, while Nayef Aguerd missed the win over Valladolid with a knee injury.

Sheraldo Becker (knee) and Arsen Zakharyan (thigh) are both set to miss out but Ander Barrenetxea should feature on his return from suspension.

Predicted line-ups for Real Madrid v Real Sociedad

Real Madrid: Lunin, Vazquez, Asensio, Rudiger, F Garcia, Valverde, Tchouameni, Bellingham, Rodrygo, Mbappe, Vinicius

Real Sociedad: Remiro, Traore, Zubeldia, Elustondo, Munoz, Sucic, Zubimendi, Marin, Kubo, Oyarzabal, Barrenetxea

Stats for Real Madrid v Real Sociedad

  • Sociedad are winless in their last four meetings with Madrid in all competitions.
  • Endrick’s goal for Madrid in the first leg was only the second Sociedad have conceded in this year’s Copa del Rey.
  • Madrid have not lost at home to Sociedad since a 4-3 defeat in the Copa del Rey in 202o. All three of Sociedad’s goalscorer (Martin Odegaard, Alexander Isak and Mikel Merino) have since left.

Prediction for Real Madrid v Real Sociedad

Madrid showed more vulnerability than might have been anticipated against Leganes and were especially exposed down the flanks on the counter.

Sociedad therefore may have a little more confidence of getting on the scoresheet with the talent they have at their disposal.

Still, it’s difficult to see them keeping Madrid out, and the overwhelming likelihood is that Los Blancos’ treble hopes will still be alive come the end of Tuesday’s encounter.

Prediction: Real Madrid 2-1 Real Sociedad (3-1 on aggregate)
