Match preview

Celtic’s Champions League adventure is now over, with full focus now on retaining their Scottish Premiership title.

On Wednesday night, the Hoops took on Real Madrid at the Bernabéu for the first time in 42 years.

While Ange Postecoglou’s team hadn’t been hammered in any of their previous Champions League games, they certainly were this time.

The Celts, in fairness, did create chances, but found themselves 5-0 down; Josip Juranović seeing a tame penalty saved.

Right at the end, the visitors did get on the board, when Jota curled a beautiful free-kick into the corner.

5-1 it finished, meaning the Bhoys bow out of Europe bottom of Group F with just two points to their name.

Kyōgo Furuhashi, Greg Taylor and Jota the scorers at the Tony Macaroni Arena.

Before Rangers’ trip to Perth on Sunday, will the Hoops extend their gap at the top?

When they last met Dundee United, Celtic enjoyed their biggest-ever away win, running out 9-0 winners at Tannadice in August.

This signalled the end of Jack Ross, after just seven games in charge and, since then, Liam Fox has stabilised the team.

The Tangerines enjoyed home victories over Aberdeen and Hibernian, but have since lost back-to-back games.

Last weekend’s underwhelming 1-0 home reverse against Motherwell was proceeded by a 2-1 defeat at St Mirren.

So, Dundee United remain in the relegation play-off spot, above Ross County on goal difference, which is actually remarkable, given that they let in nine when Celtic visited Tayside.

Anything other than a comfortable home win at Parkhead would be a big surprise.
