Match preview

Can Celtic bounce back following mid-week Champions League disappointment?

On Tuesday night, the Hoops returned to Europe’s premier club competition for the first time since 2017, with the small-matter of a visit from the record-winners and current holders Real Madrid.

For 55 minutes or so, the Celts were the side creating the more clear-cut chances.

Liel Abada shot straight at the goalkeeper, Callum McGregor’s sweet strike thwacked the post and then Daizen Maeda couldn’t turn home a Josip Juranović pull-back.

Then, either side of the hour-mark, the Spanish champions took the game away from Celtic, scoring twice before rubber stamping the victory late on with a third.

The 3-0 Real Madrid victory does not accurately reflect the balance of play, but the Hoops were punished in both boxes.

So far, domestically at least, it’s played seven and won seven for Ange Postecoglou’s team.

Last weekend, they demolished Rangers 4-0 in the Old Firm, thereby moving five points clear at the top of the table.

Abada scored twice in the first half of that one, with Jota pulling off a remarkably impudent dink in-between, before David Turnbull wrapped up the victory late on.

This means Celtic are now unbeaten in 38 Premiership matches, winning 32 of them, seeking another victory here.

So, a daunting prospect for Livingston, although they did take four points off the Hoops from three meetings last season, including drawing their only visit to Parkhead.

Last weekend, Livi beat Hearts 1-0 at the Tony Macaroni Arena.

Cristian Montaño was the only scorer at Almondvale but, in truth, Davie Martindale’s side dominated throughout.

This means the Lions have won three and lost three this season, leaving them seventh.

Anything other than a routine home victory would be a major shock.
