Match preview

After an eventful season to say the least, what will this new campaign have in store for Rangers?

Last time round, the Gers changed manager, relinquished their Premiership title, regained the Scottish Cup and reached a fifth European Final.

Just in the space of four days at the end of May, they featured in two cup finals, first beaten by Frankfurt on penalties in Seville.

Four days later, Ryan Jack and Scott Wright ensured the Light Blues ended on a positive note, ousting Hearts at Hampden.

Rangers will also be hoping August is a busy month, with the first of potentially nine games coming up this Tuesday.

They’ll take on Royale Union Saint-Gilloise in the first leg of a Champions League third qualifying clash in Leuven.

Last season’s Europa League Finalists must win two ties if they’re to qualify for the Champions League group phase for the first time since 2010.

Before then, their Premiership campaign begins, but will it be a winning start at the Tony Macaroni Arena?

Livingston meantime continue to punch above their weight, preparing for a fifth successive campaign in the top division.

The Lions finished seventh last season, having come fifth and sixth in the previous two campaigns.

So, once again, Davie Martindale’s men will, first and foremost, be aiming to survive, given that they have the league’s smallest budget.

Already this month, Livi have played four competitive matches in the League Cup group stages.

Despite losing at home to Inverness, wins over Albion Rovers, Cove Rangers and Kelty Hearts saw them reach the second round.

In the opening match of the new Premiership season, can they spring a surprise at Almondvale?

Livingston team news

Livingston have been busy in the transfer market, losing Alan Forrest, Craig Sibbald, Gavin Reilly, Jack McMillan, Keaghan Jacobs and Jack Hamilton.

Striker Esmaël Gonçalves is their most eye-catching edition, arriving from Sheikh Russel in Bangladesh.

Max Stryjek, who was sent off during the League Cup group stages, is back from suspension so will displace Ivan Konovalov.

John Souttar is set to make his Rangers debut at centre-back with Rıdvan Yılmaz the new left-back, arriving from Beşiktaş.

Ben Davies, who’s come in from Liverpool, will compete with Souttar and Goldson to start in the heart of defence.

Further forward, Rabbi Matondo, Tom Lawrence, Malik Tillman on loan and striker Antonio Čolak are all in the door.

Talismanic striker Alfredo Morelos could make his first appearance since March after a long spell out injured.

40 year old goalkeeper Allan McGregor looked set to leave this summer, but was handed a new one-year extension.
