It’s the biggest game of the Serie A season to date and arguably the biggest across Europe so far as the two title winners of the past two seasons in Italy compete at the San Siro with AC Milan and Inter Milan clashing in the Derby della Madonnina.
Last season, the games between the two clubs finished with a draw and a win for AC Milan as the reigning champions went on to smash them 2-1 at the San Siro this past February in what was their most convincing win of their Serie A triumphant campaign. Oliver Giroud scored twice that day for Milan, as Ivan Persic – now of Tottneham Hotspur – scored for Inter.
Milan’s title defence, however, could be going better with them still unbeaten but drawing twice and winning twice as well. The club have so far defeated Udinese 4-2 on the opening weekend and Bologna over last the weekend, where Giroud – the hero of last season’s derby – scored again. Rafael Leao also got his first of the season.
As for Inter, they have swiftly moved on from their hammering in Rome to Lazio, where Lautaro Martinez’s goal meant very little in a 3-1 loss. The title favourites are now second in the league after winning their other three games against Cremonese, Spezia and Lecce.
This game could go either way given the unbeaten start of Milan and the relentless force coming from the Inter camp so far this season. Romelu Lukaku has only found the goal once, however, as he scored two minutes into his second debut for the club.
Either way, it’s going to be one of the most enticing Derby della Madonnina games in a long time with both clubs winning the title once each in the last two seasons.
