Cagliari vs Bari match preview

Both are on the verge of promotion back to Serie A, so will either claim a first leg lead in this play-off final in Sardinia?

Cagliari had spent 17 of the last 18 seasons in the top-flight, before being relegated on the final day of last season.

This time round, led by the legend that is Claudio Ranieri, they finished fifth in Serie B, thereby booking their place in the play-offs.

First up, in the preliminary round, Gli Isolani overcame Venezia, courtesy of Gianluca Lapadula’s brace.

Then, in the play-off semi-final, Cagliari came from 2-0 down to beat Parma 3-2, with Zito Luvumbo bagging a brace and Lapadula converting a penalty in-between; a remarkable turnaround.

In the second leg on Saturday, Rossoblù completed the job with a hard-fought goalless draw at Stadio Ennio Tardini.

As for Bari, they last featured in the top-flight in 2011, going bankrupt and starting again in Serie D in the intervening years.

Just 12 months ago, I Galletti were crowned Serie C, Girone C champions, so, following a third place finish in Serie B, are on the cusp of back-to-back promotions.

In the play-off semi-finals, Michele Mignani’s team overcame Südtirol, losing the first leg 1-0 away and then winning the second leg by an identical scoreline at Stadio San Nicola.

1-1 it finished on aggregate but, under Lega B’s unique and bizarre rules, Bari went through, as they’d finished higher in the table.

So now, with the second leg to come on Sunday, can Cagliari claim a first leg lead at Sardegna Arena?
