Match preview

Will Cremonese’s remarkable Coppa Italia run continue?

I Grigiorossi have had to win four ties to get this far, first dumping out Ternana and Modena before causing two massive shocks.

First, they beat Napoli on penalties, after a thrilling 2-2 draw, before another away victory in the quarter-finals, this time over Roma.

What’s most astonishing is, concurrently, Davide Ballardini’s team are rock bottom of Serie A, having won just one league match all season.

Given that they are 12 points from safety, relegation back to Serie B is surely all but guaranteed.

But, in this competition, Cremonese are on the cusp of winning just the second major trophy of the club’s history, looking to add to the Anglo-Italian Cup of 1993, beating Derby in the final at Wembley back then.

I Viola haven’t won this competition for 22 years, but have already overcome Sampdoria and Torino to get this far.

Vincenzo Italiano’s team are eying up two trophies this season, as they’ll face Lech Poznań in the Europa Conference League quarter-finals later this month.

In Serie A, Fiorentina have won five on the spin, most-recently beating Inter 1-0 on Saturday, so have climbed up to ninth.

They’ve already won both meetings with Cremonese this season, 3-2 in Florence and 2-0 in Cremona, so will the away side leave Stadio comunale Giovanni Zini with a first leg lead?
