Fiorentina vs Internazionale match preview

These two clubs, between them, have featured in 26 Coppa Italia Finals, 34% of all finals, but are set to meet in Italian football’s showpiece occasion for the very first time.

Both also have big European finals to look forward to in June, meaning the pair are potentially just 180 minutes away from an historic cup double.

Internazionale Milano are seeking to retain the Coppa Italia, having defeated fierce rivals Juventus 4-2 after extra time in Rome 12 months ago.

To get to this final, I Nerazzurri have seen off Parma, Atalanta and then Juve 2-1 on aggregate, with Federico Dimarco the match-winner in the second leg at San Siro.

Simone Inzaghi’s side have already retained the Supercoppa in 2023, smashing A.C. Milan 3-0 in January, before also ousting their city-rivals to reach the Champions League Final earlier this month.

So, in 17 days time, Inter will face Manchester City in İstanbul, dreaming of a huge upset that would deliver their fourth European Cup.

Following Juventus’ ten-point dedication though, Inter are now third in Serie A, needing points from their final two games, Atalanta (H) and Torino (A), to be sure of a top four finish.

Fiorentina meantime will only be involved in UEFA competition next season if they’re victorious in at least one of the two cup finals they have to look forward to.

In a fortnight, I Viola will take on West Ham United in the Europa Conference League Final, having come from behind to overcome Basel in the semis.

Following a 2-1 defeat at home, Nicolás González’s brace forced extra time in Switzerland, before Antonín Barák’s winner in the 129th minute sparked jubilation.

This’ll be I Gigliati’s first European final for 33 years, targeting just a second European trophy, 62 years after their first.

In the Coppa Italia, Vincenzo Italiano’s team have seen off Sampdoria, Torino and Cremonese, thereby ending the club’s nine-year wait for a final appearance, last hoisting aloft this trophy in 2001.

As mentioned, with Fiorentina 11th in Serie A, they’ll only get back into Europe by beating West Ham in Prague or by prevailing here, both of which would see them into the Europa League group stages.

So far this season, the league matches between the pair have both produced away wins, with Inter winning a thriller 4-3 in Tuscany in October, before Fiorentina left San Siro 1-0 winners on April Fool’s Day.

This game, of course, will be played on neutral territory at Stadio Olimpico, so will Inter retain the Coppa Italia, or will Fiorentina end their 22-year wait for silverware?

Fiorentina team news

With their league results now irrelevant, having played over two hours in Switzerland less than three days earlier, Vincenzo Italiano made ten changes for Sunday’s 1-1 draw at Torino; only Igor kept his place.

Here though, this XI will resemble the one that took to the field at St. Jakob-Park last Thursday.

Arthur Cabral will continue to be their main goal threat, having scored 16 goals so far this season.

Captain Cristiano Biraghi was at Inter when they beat Palermo in the 2011 Coppa Italia final although, as a 19 year old, wasn’t in the matchday squad.

Predicted XI (4-3-3): Terracciano; Dodô, Igor, Milenković, Biraghi; Amrabat, Mandragora, Bonaventura; Ikoné, González, Cabral.

Internazionale team news

Having rotated a bit for Sunday’s defeat at Stadio Diego Armando Maradona, Simone Inzaghi could, almost, revert to the XI that started both Champions League semi-final legs against A.C. Milan.

So, despite scoring four in Inter’s last three Serie A matches, Romelu Lukaku is likely to be back on the bench, with Edin Džeko chosen as Lautaro Martínez’s partner.

The one enforced change is set to come in midfield; Henrikh Mkhitaryan is a doubt, having hobbled off in the most-recent Derby della Madonnina, with Marcelo Brozović therefore set to come in.

Of the likely XI, six started last season’s final win over Juventus, with Nicolò Barella and Hakan Çalhanoğlu both scoring.

Predicted XI (3-5-2): Onana; Darmian, Bastoni, Acerbi; Dumfries, Brozović, Çalhanoğlu, Barella, Dimarco; Džeko, Martínez.
