Match preview

Inter Milan will be eyeing up a spot in the top four ahead of the World Cup break in a few weeks’ time as they sit seventh in the league before playing hosts to the strugglers Sampdoria in the Serie A relegation zone.

Inter were the champions from two seasons ago, and with Romelu Lukaku spearheading the charge towards the 2020/21 title and returning for this season, it looked as if the Milan side would be the clear favourites to win Serie A once more. It’s been anything but easy, however, with the Belgian not playing since August through injury and with just 21 points on the board from 11 games.

Inter have not drawn this season, and won seven of their league fixtures so far, losing the other four. The alarm bells ring for Simeone Inzaghi’s men when you look at their defensive statistics, however.

Inzaghi has seen his side let in 17 goals already, scoring 22 of their own. This is the highest amount of goals let in within the top 10, and you have to head all the way down to 13th to find a side with an equally poor record, as Bologna have let in 17 too. In fact, Sampdoria themselves don’t look much worse in defence, and it’s been their own goalscoring that has been the problem.

Inter played out a stunning 4-3 win over Fiorentina in Florence over the weekend, and needed a goal from Henrikh Mkhitaryan in the 95th minute of the game to steal all three points. It only proved their goalscoring brilliance and their defensive woes even more, but they should get all three points again here at the San Siro.
