Lecce have had a rude awakening in their Serie A return this season with the club losing both games early on ahead of playing hosts to Empoli at the Stadio Via del Mare this Sunday evening.
Lecce haven’t rolled over for anyone after three games in all competitions, because despite losing each fixture, they have given it a solid go. A visit of title favourites Inter Milan was the toughest possible start for the club on home soil, but Inter did need a 95th-minute winner to seal all three points.
Lecce looked a bit better against Sassuolo last weekend, where once more, it was a freak of nature that won them the game as Domenico Berardi scored one of the goals of the year with a stunning volley from range.
Neverthless, the Serie B winners had just three shots on target across both games and are looking weak on the attacking front. Worse yet, after losing in the Coppa Italia to Serie B’s Cittadella, they remain on a losing run of three games, despite goals from Gabriel Strefezza and Lorenzo Colombo forcing extra time.
Empoli, on the other hand, barely look any better. They’ve so far lost and draw a game in Serie A after Spezia defeatd them by a narrow 1-0 victory, before Fiorentina would manage to steal a point from the Carlo Castellani Stadium in a goalless draw.
A defeat to Serie B strugglers SPAL has thrown more questions towards manager Paolo Zanetti, and if his side can’t win here, the pressure will only mount on Empoli after a decent spell last season saw them finish in mid-table.
