Match preview

It’s 14th against 18th in Serie A this weekend, as minnows Salernitana prepare to welcome struggling Hellas Verona to the Stadio Arechi on Sunday, October 9th.

In taking a quick look back over the last few rounds of gameweeks in Italy’s top-flight, the importance of securing a result, for both of these sides, cannot be understated.

Let’s first take a look at the form of Salernitana.

After enjoying something of a miracle escape from relegation in 2021/22, I Granata have since, all told, failed to kick on this time round.

This came all the way back in Gameweek three of the Serie A campaign, with a 5-0 drubbing at the hands of Sassuolo in their return to action on the back of the international break having only served to dampen spirits further at the Arechi.

Salernitana’s upcoming opponents, though, have not exactly set the world alight across their own term to date.

In fact, quite the contrary has proven to be the case.

Whilst the likes of Udinese and Atalanta have acted as the surprise packages of the Serie A season, Hellas Verona, on the other hand, have proven perhaps the biggest disappointment.

Still reeling from the departure of star striker and top scorer Giovanni Simeone, the Gialloblu have put just five points on the board thus far, having slipped to defeat in no fewer than five of their opening eight fixtures.

The latest of these losses came last weekend, when, in their own post-international break return, Gabriele Cioffi’s men were put to the sword by two goals to one, at home to high-flying Udinese.

We at 101 are therefore backing Salernitana, despite their own woes of late, to ultimately arrest their recent slide at Verona’s expense on Sunday afternoon.
